Since its founding in 1972, Interfaith Works (IW) has provided extensive wraparound services to the most vulnerable residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. Our 15 interrelated and co-located programs prevent individuals from falling through the safety net, stabilize housing and financial circumstances, and empower individuals and families to lift themselves out of poverty and homelessness. Our team of 130 professionals administers programs that include emergency financial assistance, distribution of free food and clothing, vocational services, and a complete continuum of housing. Using our Lift Strategy: Prevent, Stabilize, and Empower, we support 17,000 individuals annually.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Finance provides leadership and direction to IW regarding all financial matters. This role ensures that IW's business, financial and grant practices are consistent and in compliance with industry, legal, and ethical standards. The Director oversees the effective management of the accounting and financial reporting functions. This position works in partnership with the Leadership team while managing two Finance team members. The nature of this work requires a Director who can adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in a deadline-oriented environment.

 

Finance

  • Oversee financial systems, strategies, and activities as well as banking relationships.

  • Continuously review and maintain excellent financial controls, policies, and procedures. Ensure efficient functioning and documentation for all financial systems/processes including receipts, disbursements, billing, bookkeeping, budgeting, and accounting.

  • Supervise and oversee the accounting, accounts receivable, and accounts payable functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial information. Review and evaluate reconciliation of balance sheet accounts for accuracy and completeness.

  • Act as the custodian of all funds. Ensure proper cash controls are implemented to mitigate risk.

  • Review, analyze, and track organizational business models and prepare regular predictive financial analyses to provide insights into the operations and business plans for IW.

 

Planning and Strategic Engagements

  • Develop a deep understanding of the business processes, organization, programs, and initiatives of IW to provide strategic financial consulting, modeling and financial analysis to the leadership team and Board.

  • Lead organizational budgeting, cash flow and forecasting efforts. Work with staff and Board to develop and implement IW core budgets, and work with staff to develop and implement budgets.

  • Develop financial plans and forecasts for IW.

  • Monitor, interpret, and present financial results of operations each month. Serve as financial liaison/staff to the Board.

  • Represent IW to financial partners, including financial institutions, donors, auditors, etc.

  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns.

  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

 

Administration and Management

  • Oversee payroll processing and manage the annual benefits renewal process.

  • Analyze complex financial and compliance requirements for contracts and grant agreements, etc. Set standard approaches for budget and budget notes preparation and review.

  • Ensure that the internal system is created to monitor grant compliance.

  • Prepare systems to review and consistently monitor and report financial information for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Continuously seek to streamline our operational processes to enhance accounting as well as financial planning and analysis functions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, public accounting experience, and CPA is highly preferred.

  • Minimum 8+ years of broad nonprofit finance experience, including experience in gathering and evaluating complex financial information, managing staff as well as multiple funding sources, and making actionable recommendations to the CEO and Finance Committee. A detailed understanding of nonprofit finance and cost accounting functions is critical.

  • Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with senior leadership, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.

  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to collaborate with the leadership team on financial analysis and expense control. Capable of enforcing accountability, and ability to develop and empower leaders from the bottom up and lead from the top down.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and people management skills. IW is a collaborative environment, so understanding cooperative decision making is important.

  • Experience with financial system transitions and automatization is preferred.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

  • Highly organized, self-motivated with attention to detail and a strong commitment to follow through.
