About MVP
MVP is a best-in-class advising platform connecting progressive donors to the most effective and promising grassroots organizations in the country working at the intersection of movements, community organizing, and elections. We aim to increase investment in frontline organizations led by the most impacted communities to increase turnout among the progressive base, build long-term political power, and ultimately to transform our country at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2020 cycle, MVP successfully moved over $120 million to over 600 local groups across the country, focused in the most critical states.
Our Approach:
We are organizers, and the heart of our work is organizing donors through MVP to support local groups in order to build, sustain, and amplify their impact. We work in service of local groups, and we try to be aware at all times of the power dynamics of being a funder and to be careful about incentivizing actions that could alter an organization’s own priorities; we work hard not to impose on our partners. We are also striving to continuously scrutinize and dismantle the ways we manifest and reproduce white supremacy culture both internally and externally.
We focus on building from our assets, and taking a positive approach to growth and change that helps groups and donors to feel comfortable being vulnerable about their areas of improvement. We believe in a non-competitive, non-divisive, whole ecosystem approach; we are always seeking opportunities to support and encourage collaboration among groups and donors.
POSITION OVERVIEW
As the Director of Donor Organizing, you will lead MVP’s strategies to build and manage a scaled, decentralized volunteer donor organizing program that enlists MVP donors as peer-to-peer organizers and ambassadors. This program will steward thousands of donors by engaging, training, and supporting hundreds of donors as volunteer organizers in hosting peer-to-peer events and a range of outreach and organizing activities, building on the success of MVP’s current handful of strong local donor organizer teams.
This position will report to the VP of Development, and will work closely with the rest of the Development team. Over time, we expect to grow and make additional hires in the Donor Organizing department, starting with an events manager.
As the Director of Donor Organizing, you will be responsible for:
-
Staff & volunteer
management: Effectively manage, support, and collaborate
with a mix of full-time & part-time staff and contractors,
while identifying gaps and growing the team as appropriate. Support
and grow a team of volunteer leaders from MVP’s donor base.
Actively train, coach, and develop your staff and volunteer teams
to achieve their goals through constructive feedback, guidance, and
accountability.
Planning and
budgeting: Create annual and quarterly departmental goals,
plans, and budgets, and actively manage the budget on an ongoing
basis.
Events: Drive our
events strategy, working with department staff and volunteers to
build capacity toward a high volume of event planning (virtual
events and eventually in-person local events).
Local teams support and
development: MVP has a handful of local donor organizing
teams currently in place, two of which (in eastern and western
Massachusetts) are very strong and relatively self-sufficient. In
addition to supporting the existing teams, you will design and
execute a plan to build and sustain more local teams in key
geographies.
Donor engagement:
Design and manage a program for volunteers to engage thousands of
donors in the $500-$10,000 range as peer leaders, as part of the
larger events and peer leadership-based donor organizing
strategy.
Cross-departmental
collaboration: Work closely with the major donor,
communications, and fundraising partnerships teams to align plans,
systems, events, and donor outreach, organizing, and stewardship
strategies.
Data and systems:
Tend to, and in some cases help to develop, systems and data in
alignment with MVP’s overall donor data and systems protocols.
Ensure that all data is properly recorded and tracked using MVP
systems, processes, and protocols.
Development of
materials: Engage in visioning and creation of donor
materials in partnership with the Development, Programs, and
Communications teams and volunteer leaders.
-
Monitor, evaluate, learn,
evolve: Lead reflections, evaluation, reporting, and
learning processes to document and assess effectiveness, both
annually and in real time. Continue to clarify and develop MVP’s
vision and strategy for donor organizing.
- Other duties: We’re a growing organization, and responsibilities will evolve with the role and as opportunities emerge.
Qualifications
-
At least 5-10 years of experience in
some combination of grassroots fundraising, major donor
fundraising, and other relevant social change and/or political
organizing.
Skill and comfort managing people,
teams, and budgets, including large volunteer teams.
Exceptional skill and experience in
training and leadership development, including work with remote
teams and volunteers.
Cultural humility - ability to build
relationships across lines of difference.
Demonstrated ability to engage at a
high level with issues of racial equity and inclusion.
Ability to envision and manage
execution of large-scale projects.
Excellent written and verbal
communication skills.
Comfort with technology and database
systems.
Passion for grassroots progressive
political change and shifting power to marginalized
communities.
We realize that some great candidates may not have every single thing on this list - that’s OK! If this job posting piques your interest, we encourage you to apply!
Location: Fully remote with the expectation of occasional travel post-pandemic (i.e. 2-5 times annually). We strive to create a family-friendly work environment and can make accommodations for team members with limited ability to travel.
Compensation and hours:
This is a full-time, salaried position with a base salary range of $90,000 - $115,000, commensurate with skills and experience, with generous benefits including employer-paid medical and optional dental and vision insurance, basic life insurance, 401(k), regular work-from-home and wellness stipends, and four weeks of paid vacation.
