POSITION TITLE: Development Officer
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Development Officer reports to the Diocesan Secretary for Development and assists with developing and implementing objectives and strategies to meet both short- and long-term funding needs of the Diocese. The Development Officer’s focus is on developing relationships with donors, pastors, parish staffs and volunteers throughout the Diocese in support of Diocesan and parish fundraising efforts to include annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, events, and capital campaigns.
Assist the Diocesan Secretary for Development in the development and implementation of a comprehensive development program to secure the financial support for current and future needs of the Diocese, its parishes and other entities.
Participate in all facets of the development program including, but not be limited to, the Diocesan Annual Appeal, Catholic Social Services fundraising, planned giving and capital campaigns.
Provide direct assistance, guidance and support for development activities along with the Diocesan Secretary for Development to diocesan parishes, such as increased offertory campaigns, capital campaigns, planned giving, online giving and other fundraising efforts.
Maintain and strengthen relationships with pastors, parish life coordinators, parish staff, and Appeal parish representatives to include regular contact and follow up.
Assist with the development and implementation of strategies to increase the number of donors to the Diocesan Annual Appeal with a specific focus on increasing participation among new parishioners and non-donors.
Write and design a variety of ads, brochures, articles and materials for Annual Appeal, Catholic Social Services fundraising and various Diocesan sponsorship of community events.
Help initiate new and creative ways to engage donors utilizing technology and social media.
Collaborate with the Diocesan Communications Office to produce the Annual Appeal video, social media posts and articles for The Catholic Light and local media.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
The Development Officer must have an understanding of and commitment to the goals and mission of the Diocese of Scranton. The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser and relationship builder with a history of success in fundraising and donor development to support the future of the Diocese.
Working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to, the Bishop’s vision to foster servant leadership; must also be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
Minimum of five years fundraising experience with a nonprofit organization to include Annual Appeals, capital campaigns and planned giving.
Possess a demonstrated record of successful major donor cultivation and solicitation and experience in designing and executing donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
Bachelor's degree required.
Superior communication skills with the ability to articulate a vision for supporting the mission of the Diocese.
Detail oriented, self-starter with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting continuous deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to perform duties with a high level of professionalism, enthusiasm, flexibility, integrity, judgment and confidentiality.
Familiarity with using the MS Windows operating system, expertise in graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign and experience with social media and database systems, preferably Raiser’s Edge.
Ability and willingness to gain a detailed knowledge of the diocesan infrastructure, culture, policies, and procedures.
