The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, (CSGV) founded in 1974, is the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization. Our mission, in union with our sister organization, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (EFSGV), is to make gun violence rare and abnormal.

 

We use a public health and equity lens to identify and implement evidence-based policy solutions and programs to reduce gun violence in all its forms — from suicide to intimate partner homicide to shootings in the communities that are most impacted by gun violence. CSGV and EFSGV are thought leaders in the gun violence prevention movement translating research into policy and building partnerships to advocate to enact legislation to save lives.

 

Position Summary

The Foundation Giving Manager, a key member of the CSGV/EFSGV’s development team, is responsible for overseeing over $1.5 million income annually. This role, under the direction of, and in collaboration with the Director of Development, will contribute to the strategy and drive implementation to renew and steward our current foundation funders, and build our foundation prospect pipeline to identify and secure new sources of revenue in support of our mission to make gun violence rare and abnormal.

 

Under the supervision of the Director of Development, the Foundation Relations Manager will oversee the foundation giving program at CSGV/EFSGV and will be responsible for writing all foundation grant renewal applications, grant reports and conducting all grant program tracking, including managing proposal submission deadlines and deliverables.  A successful candidate will be, first and foremost, a great writer with a passion for saving lives This individual should possess an ability to translate public health research and gun violence policy and advocacy to meet foundation funder guidelines and program priorities. These activities include engaging and collaborating with program staff to relay the details of each CSGV/EFSGV program to foundation funders. This role is also responsible for researching and identifying a foundation prospect pipeline and qualifying prospects through outreach and submission of LOI’s. This position is vital to the long-term financial stability and growth of the organization.

 

In addition, the candidate must be highly detail oriented and possess an ability to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, meet deadlines and be adept at adjusting to the changing priorities of a small but nimble team. A passion for working to prevent gun violence is a must.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing all renewals of current foundation grants, including writing grant proposals to current funders and coordinating the interdepartmental grant application process
  • Responsible for writing all grant application budgets in conjunction with the Directorof Administration and the Executive Director and tracking and reporting on all foundation grant financial requirements
  • Ensure compliance with grant agreements
  • Complete all required foundation grant reporting, including narrative and financial reports, working with program, research, finance, and other staff to ensure timely submission
  • Oversee recognition and stewardship process such as timely acknowledgment letters to foundation supporters etc.
  • Manage communications with foundation prospects and supporters
  • Assist Director of Development and Executive Director to develop/deliver presentations for foundation prospects and funders
  • Record and track all activity and progress in Trello project management tool and Every Action database, including prospecting, moves management, pipeline of opportunities/deliverables, grant management/admin/filing, etc.
  • Maintain and regularly update the calendar of foundation deadlines (i.e., due dates for grant applications, reports, letters of inquiry, etc.) in Salesforce database
  • Maintain and regularly update portfolio of foundation funders in Trello, including accounts and contacts
  • Assist with other external writing as projects as needed such as website content, fact sheets, case studies and monthly newsletters 
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

 

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities 

  • Exceptional grant writing skills, including a proven track record of success writing winning proposals
  • Experience with grant management and knowledge of grant stewardship best practices
  • Experience with grant budgeting and knowledge of the basics of nonprofit finance/accounting
  • Experience with grant project management tools and donor databases
  • Experience with, and/or knowledge of, the institutional/foundation giving landscape
  • Experience with, and/or knowledge of, the public health, gun violence prevention, social justice, and racial equity arenas
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate between departments and work with diverse groups of people from all backgrounds and across different constituencies
  • Excellent research/prospecting skills and experience using online grant databases
  • The ideal candidate will be an organized, detail-oriented team player with outstanding judgment, highly developed analytical abilities, interpersonal skills, and the ability to multitask
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
  • Excellent computer proficiency, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) Google Suite and internet research skills
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to conduct assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

 

Required and Preferred Education, Experience and Credentials 

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in grant writing, grant management, or related work within the field of nonprofit development/communication
  • Undergraduate degree required (or an equivalent combination of training and professional work experience)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in non-profit work, relationship management and foundation experience.
  • Fluency in areas of public health and violence prevention as it relates to the many facets of gun violence prevalent in communities across the nation.  
  • Comprehension of the private foundation funding process and norms.
  • Understanding of, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn, the terminology and trends in the public health sector and research translation. 
  • Ability to develop materials (proposals/one-pagers/partnership concepts) through a public health /race equity and DEI framework.
  • Proficient in understanding budgets attached to funder proposals and grants.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally and develop relationships with colleagues and understand public health research translation across departments.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Prior experience using Trello project management tool and Every Action database a plus.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • 50% - Writing and preparing foundation grant renewal applications and grant reports
  • 20% Liaise with program directors to translate and document a wide range of gun violence prevention programs and public health research to fulfill the requirements of foundation grant applications and reports
  • 15% - Research and develop funder pipeline through foundation research.
  • 10% Assist with other external writing as projects as needed 
  • 5% - Assist in stewarding foundation partners especially new funders to build relationships

 

This position is virtual for the time being until working in-person on site at our downtown Washington DC office is permitted. CSGV is in downtown Washington DC easily accessible by public transportation, located near the McPherson Square and Metro Stations. The work schedule is 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Standard time during weekdays with possible occasional evening events. 

 

The starting salary for this position is $65,000.
