Senior Major Gifts Officer
As a senior member of BAMPFA’s growing fundraising team, the Senior Major Gifts Officer plays an essential role in building philanthropic partnerships with individuals and families in support of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Reporting to the Director of Development (DOD), the Senior Major Gifts Officer is primarily responsible for meeting annual engagement, solicitation, and income targets through frontline work with individual donors and close collaborations with BAMPFA’s curatorial and program staff. The incumbent will manage a portfolio of current, lapsed, and potential supporters, with a priority on those capable of making gifts of up to $100,000. With a mature portfolio, this position is expected to raise approximately $1 million annually through personally managed solicitations.
The Senior Major Gifts Officer works closely with BAMPFA’s Director, curators, and other members of the development team—as well as colleagues in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR)—to ensure that all prospect strategies are thoughtfully designed and implemented. In partnership with the Senior Grants Officer, this position leads a comprehensive, integrated approach for securing restricted gifts for BAMPFA’s exhibitions, collections, programs, and special initiatives. The professional in this role will be a highly visible representative among the museum’s member, donor, and collector community.
- Frontline fundraising: Follows best practices in donor development and moves-management. Devotes majority of time to direct frontline activities to engage, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects; this includes conducting background research, visit requests, in-person or virtual meetings, proposal development, donor correspondence, contact reports, and stewardship activities. Makes a minimum of 8-10 substantive face-to-face contacts per month, and submits at least 10-12 major gift proposals per year. This activity directly supports the position’s financial goal of raising $750,000-$1 million annually.
- Program and pipeline management: Works with senior development staff at BAMPFA and UDAR to develop and track the museum’s restricted giving pipelines on both a project-specific basis (exhibitions, film series, education programs) and overall. Meets regularly with curatorial and program staff to review donor pipelines. Works closely with senior staff across BAMPFA to identify top institutional priorities for philanthropic partnership. Collaborates in the development of related giving opportunities, collateral, cases for support, recognition opportunities, etc. Becomes a knowledgeable and persuasive advocate for these priorities.
- Department initiatives: As part of BAMPFA’s integrated fundraising operation, participates regularly in strategic and operational business of the development department, including annual planning and goal-setting, training and professional development, DEAI initiatives, staffing of donor and member events, and fundraising for the annual gala.
- Financial planning and reporting: Works with DOD and Business Services Director on regular revenue projections from the individual giving pipeline, including annual, mid-year, and quarterly projections. Ensures that all solicitation activity is accurately tracked in CADS to facilitate timely reports and financial forecasts.
- Thorough understanding and command of major gift fundraising and moves-management concepts, principles, techniques, procedures, and practices.
- Proven history of personally soliciting and securing gifts of five and six figures from individuals, preferably within an art museum or university setting.
- Thorough ability to identify, plan, articulate, and execute a wide range of personalized approaches to individual donor cultivation and solicitation.
- Thorough working knowledge of or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of BAMPFA—and/or an institution of a comparable profile—including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including personal warmth and political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
- Basic familiarity with the principles, tools, and approaches to planned giving.
- Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera governing nonprofit fundraising.
- Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives, both individually and as part of a team.
- Highly developed attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and excellent judgement in handling sensitive information.
- Strong ability to use and adapt to a variety of software and productivity tools, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and various CRM systems (including Tessitura, Salesforce, or similar tools).
- Ability to multi-task various projects and to maintain a broad range of personal fundraising and stewardship relationships simultaneously.
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary and Benefits:
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary range of the position is $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 commensurate with experience.
