Global Citizens Initiative, Inc., or “GCI” (www.globalci.org), is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Greenwich, Connecticut that engages, educates and empowers the next generation of global citizens. The cornerstone of GCI is its annual 9-day educational Summit that aims to globalize the perspectives of 28 secondary school students from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds from around the world to transform them into lifelong ethical leaders of positive change. The Summit launches a 9-month Fellowship during which students plan and implement service projects in their home communities, based on one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals. Each student is assigned an experienced mentor by GCI who provides guidance and advice on their projects for the duration of the Fellowship.  From 2014 - 2018, GCI held the Summit in Cambridge, MA, and in 2019 the Summit was held in Tokyo Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GCI cancelled the 2020 and 2021 Summit/Fellowship, which it expects to resume during the summer of 2022 on the campus of the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

GCI developed an annual Seminar for 12 secondary school educators from around the world to help them prepare their students for leadership roles and for initiating real change in their communities. About Global Citizens Initiative

Global Citizens Initiative (GCI) is a US-based not-for-profit organization that engages, educates, and empowers the next generation of citizens from all sectors of society to become lifelong, ethical leaders of positive change. GCI raises funds to ensure the inclusion of students and educators from under-resourced communities and schools in three complementary programs:

GCI Summit and Fellowship: The Summit, the flagship program, convenes secondary school students from across the globe who represent an extraordinary diversity of heritages, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences in an intensive, nine-day experience they often describe as life-changing. Students participate in design-thinking workshops, build ethical leadership and communication skills, and deepen intercultural empathy through collaboration. Partnered with mentors, students then complete a 10-month Fellowship to develop local service projects that address the Sustainable Development Goals. Since 2014, GCI has hosted 160 Fellows from 70 countries ⎯ including Colombia, Zimbabwe, Japan, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan ⎯ whose local service projects have positively impacted communities worldwide. Through GoGCI, a robust online alumni platform, GCI supports them on their journey as global citizens.

Educator Seminar: International and US educators are trained in the GCI Method through the six-day Seminar, a professional development opportunity that empowers them to bring the core components of global citizenship, discussion-based learning, and design-thinking into their classrooms. This allows GCI to broaden students’ access to the development of communication, ethical leadership, and problem-solving skills, much needed 21st Century skills.

Global Collaborative Curriculum (GCC): To meet the growing demand for GCI’s training, GCI is now developing the GCC with a pilot program that partners the King School (Connecticut, US) and King’s Academy (Madaba, Jordan). The core components of the GCI Method are integrated into courses offered in each school. Students engage with each other in real time online and collaborate on team service-based projects. GCI aspires to expand this pilot into an ecosystem of globally and socioeconomically diverse schools that will partner to allow their students to build ethical leadership skills and learn about each other’s cultures while collaborating to address some of today’s most pressing global challenges.
