POSITION OVERVIEW: Works in collaboration with the Founder’s Office, Chief Strategy Officer, and Chief Operating Officer to provide leadership in the planning, organization, administration, evaluation and strategic development of organizational public relations, marketing, brand development and reputation, and communications initiatives for Define American. The Chief Communications Officer serves as the central point of contact for media relations, public affairs, and peer organization relations and is responsible for all public facing communications from the organization. This role is tasked with the development and promotion of Define American’s brand.

This position reports directly to the Board of Directors. This classification works closely with organizational leadership to direct and manage internal and external communications initiatives, brand development and reputation, publications and media relations of Define American.

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

LOCATION: Remote

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors

TRAVEL: 15–25%

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and assessment of Define American’s operations in the communications, marketing, brand and reputation management, and public relations arenas.

  • Manages Define American’s brand and reputation through strategic surveying, distribution of news, announcements, email campaigns, social media posts and marketing campaigns to ensure that the public understands the mission and programmatic work of Define American, as well as views the organization favorably
  • Represents Define American in the press, on panels, at external meetings and events
  • Identifies opportunities for Define American to obtain partner with peer organizations, to garner visibility and potential funding
  • Manages, supervises, coaches and evaluates a team of diverse communications professionals to ensure effective and efficient communications operations
  • Oversees the design and production of print materials and publications, website management, graphic design, and social media content creation and management
  • Builds and maintains relationships with members of media agencies for radio, TV, digital publications, podcasts and other channel exposure
  • Directs the composition of internal materials such as newsletters, news releases, announcements, online posts, website updates, video productions, special projects and related Public Relations and marketing projects, develops pre-emptive, proactive communications plans addressing targeted audiences to mitigate risk and drive communications around key issues
  • Develops a comprehensive crisis communications plan and manages crises as they arise (and/or manages outside crisis consultants when appropriate)
  • Coordinates with the Founder’s office to identify the intersectionality of the work of Define American and the Founder to best amplify organizational and Founder led projects
  • Analyzes the immigration advocacy as well as social justice landscape(s) to identify intersecting partnership opportunities and the role and dynamics that Define American plays in operating within the ecosystem to garner engagement and support
  • Implements innovative methods for brand reach to enhance perception and strengthen the images of Define American.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Holds a Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English or another related field, or has 10 years experience in public relations, community relations, marketing or related occupation with direct responsibility for publications, media relations, brand management, communications planning and implementation, including at least three years of project management and supervisory experience
  • Demonstrates ability as a strong writer and oral communicator, with sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of those in the immigration, storytelling, and advocacy spaces
  • Provides thought-leadership, cultivates and maintains positive relationships with multiple audiences
  • Manages, supervises, coaches and evaluates a team of diverse communications professionals to ensure effective and efficient communications operations
  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral
  • Shapes and controls the flow of information to key constituencies
  • Sustains positive and open lines of communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Skilled public speaker
  • Coordinates a variety of high-profile tasks and responsibilities
  • Identifies story ideas and shape key messages to generate positive coverage of programmatic work and Founder’s office initiatives
  • Handles sensitive media relations situations, including on-site crisis communications response
  • Demonstrates experience with marketing and public relations campaigns with a thorough understanding of branding and marketing communications strategies and tactics, including content strategy, digital and social media
