The Development Officer, Foundations leads the foundation giving strategy for The Bowery Mission, overseeing all activities related to grant proposals and reports for private and corporate foundations and other institutions. The Development Officer, Foundations collaborates with the Chief Development Officer, the CEO, other members of the development team to lead and support all grant-related activities and an annual revenue goal of $1.5 million.

The Development Officer, Foundations develops effective written content, program metrics, and financial documents, and packages these in a timely manner to meet all proposal and report deadlines. The Development Officer, Foundations supervises and collaborates closely with the Grants Coordinator. Within the Development Team, the Development Officer, Foundations is a primary collector, organizer, and communicator of relevant information on program operations.

 Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Take lead responsibility on grants submission and management, coordinating activities and meeting deadlines for grant proposals and reports.
  2. Manage a caseload of foundation partners and achieve associated revenue goals.
  3. Identify and cultivate new prospects.
  4. Supervise a Grants Coordinator who will provide support in all functions.
  5. Supervise the administrative details and financial reporting for all grants, monitoring proposal requirements and ensuring goals and objectives in grant letters and contracts are met.
  6. Develop effective and persuasive narrative content for use in grant proposals and reports.
  7. Ensure written content accurately reflects current programming and organizational priorities.
  8. Ensure each proposal is aligned with a clearly defined, realistic set of metrics.
  9. Develop and interpret strong sets of outputs and outcomes for use in grant proposals and reports.
  10. Collaborate with Finance team to develop strong financial documents, including customized budgets and income sources documents, adapting existing financial documents as needed.

Requirements:

  1. Embrace the organization’s Statement of Faith.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or equivalent professional writing experience
  3. Excellent written communication skills and demonstrated ability to relay complex information with precision, clarity, and attention to detail
  4. Proven experience in project management and the ability to meet a variety of deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  5. Strong skills in financial analysis and reporting
  6. High proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office software
  7. High integrity that builds trust with internal and external stakeholders

 Preferred:

  1. At least two years of grant writing and/or grants management experience
  2. Knowledge of foundation and funding worlds (in related nonprofit fields a plus)
  3. Experience in cultivating and stewarding foundation relationships
  4. Experience with Foundation Directory Online (FDO) and/or other prospect research tools
  5. Experience with CRM databases (Raiser’s Edge a plus)
  6. Experience supervising staff
