Founded in 1850, Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) is an independent, residential, liberal arts institution with roughly 1,700 students. Over the past 171 years, Illinois Wesleyan has left an indelible mark on the students who have passed through its classrooms, laboratories, performance halls, and athletic fields.  The Office for Advancement works cohesively as a team to inspire philanthropy to provide financial support for students, faculty/staff, institutional programs, and campus facilities.  The purpose of this work is to provide a transformational undergraduate experience for Illinois Wesleyan students and prepare them for future success and the ability to positively impact society.

  

The University’s Office for Advancement invites applications for the full-time position of Director for Advancement – Planned Giving & Major Gifts.  This person is responsible for coordinating Illinois Wesleyan’s Planned Giving program; to build and strengthen relationships within an assigned portfolio of alumni, friends and parents in order to facilitate philanthropy at the major gift level.  While the position is intended to be on-campus, remote work opportunities can be considered.  

 

Responsibilities:

    Coordinate the Planned Giving program within the Advancement Office.
      Possesses the knowledge of all vehicles of planned giving (bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts, etc) Manage the marketing, segmentation, and branding of planned giving program Provide education to members of the Advancement Office to help introduce planned giving options Working with the VP and AVP for Advancement to identify stewardship options for documented planned gifts
    Accept responsibility for the cultivation and personal solicitation of a portfolio of major gift (ability to give $100K+) and planned gift prospects. Document all visits, contacts, and communications with assigned prospects in the Advancement database system. Acquire and maintain an in-depth knowledge of Illinois Wesleyan’s history, programs, activities and culture. Identify and research other prospects capable of providing major gifts to the University. Provide direction and support for the regional activities and campaign initiatives.
      Coordinate advancement-related travel and communication for the President and other University representatives Coordinate campaign meetings and events.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

 

    A minimum of 5 years experience in major gifts and planned giving is required.  Experience by way of Juris Doctor (JD) is acceptable. Excellent communication skills--oral, written, and listening. Strong people and relationship-building skills with constituents from a variety of backgrounds and a range of generations.  Ability to navigate conversations across differing cultural and political viewpoints.    Ability to function with a high degree of independence and work within a team.  Demonstrate a strong work ethic and experience producing positive results within a goal-oriented and collaborative environment. Extensive travel is required for this position; average of 30+ overnight trips a year Valid US driver's license.
