The University of Maryland Baltimroe School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking a Director of Development and Board Relations, that will report to the Assistant Dean for Development, will be responsible for day to management of the School of Medicine Board of Visitors, assisting with recruitment, fundraising and strategic planning for the board.  This position will also be responsible for other major gift activity as assigned.
This position will also act as a liaison with a number of organizations with which we have ongoing relationships and strategize with the Assistant Dean on new partnerships and opportunities that will expand our prospect and donor base.
This position will work closely with the Dean and the Assistant Dean for Development to maximize the time and talents of the School of Medicine Board of Visitors. Responsible for management the Board of Visitors and all board meetings and all related activities. Assists the Dean, and the Assistant Dean for Development on fundraising efforts for all board members. This position will be the primary liaison between the board members and the SOM leadership.
This position will work closely with the Assistant Dean of Development and the Director, Major Gifts to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for certain assigned prospects for the Dean’s special projects and other capital projects as needed.
In conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Development and the Director, Major Gifts, develops a set of annual metrics that is comprised of:  Total $’s Raised; Proper Portfolio Size; Number of proposals presented and Number of Substantive Visits/Contacts.

Primary Duties:
  • Analyzes the effectiveness of programs and recommends improvements or new strategies.
  • Contributes individually or in cooperation with others to achieve the school’s major gift goals.
  • Identifies, plans, and completes short-term complex major gift cultivation to achieve school's goals. Plans and performs short-term projects and long-term projects and planning while monitoring short-term goals.
  • Coordinates major gift activities for an assigned area in the completion of short-term complex projects. Serves as informational resource and guides and assists development officers and staff to achieve school objectives.  Performs complex assignments by developing methods, principles, and concepts to achieve major gifts outcomes with indirect supervision.
  • Given latitude within prescribed guidelines by providing innovative solutions to complex functional problems that impact school's success.
  • Adheres and proposes school standards of operation, policies, procedures, processes, and protocols to ensure compliant, effective, and efficient operation of complex functions.              
  • Performs other duties as assigned.                                                                                            
  Qualifications    Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Seven (7) years of development experience, including board manangement or other related development experience with at least two (2) years in major gifts or higher education development field.
Prior supervison of others preferred.   Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation and change management.   • Knowledge of best practices in non-profit fundraising, major gifts, reporting and receipting.
  • Knowledgeable of emerging trends and industry practices within development and assigned area.
  • Ability to use relationship building skills to identify and cultivate new prospects as well as maintain and build upon relationships with existing prospects.
  • Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research, gather information, solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with, as well as support effective partnerships with peers, subordinates, and campus and community leaders.
  • Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.
