Primary Responsibilities:

In 2020, UWSN received an unrestricted 10m gift from Ms. MacKenzie Scott.  The organization now has an historic opportunity to expand the already significant impact on the communities we serve.  To that end, the organization seeks a CEO who: Provides strong, innovative, and collaborative leadership and vision for United Way of Southern Nevada (“UWSN”) in developing significant financial resources through fundraising, cultivating and soliciting of major gifts; and in identifying and addressing community priorities in early childhood education, student success, college and career transition, and workforce supports. .  Creates and builds awareness of United Way of Southern Nevada’s role in the community and ensures involvement of its diverse constituencies.  Maintains accountability for the overall operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the policies set by the Board of Directors.  The scope of this position is broad, requiring the President & CEO to establish and maintain significant relationships with persons at all levels within the public, private, and volunteer sectors.  These persons include corporate chief executives, local government leaders, labor representatives, leaders of affinity groups, leaders of other funding organizations, and representatives of other United Way organizations including Toqueville and Women United.

 

Essential Duties:

1. Provides leadership in developing the financial resources to meet UWSN’s mission:

  • Establishes financial development goals with the Board of Directors.
  • Develops and actively implements creative strategies and plans for achieving financial goals and ensures appropriate staffing of the campaign structure.
  • Serves as the principal fundraising officer devoting significant time (65%) to the cultivation and solicitation of Major Gifts.

2. Maintains a leadership role among UWSN’s constituencies:

  • Meets regularly with community decision makers, advancing community interests in alignment with UWSN’s mission and values.
  • Represents UWSN with professional demeanor and thought leadership at all times with community groups, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintains regular communications with and oversees stewardship of all major donor and affinity groups.

3. Utilizing professional demeanor and thought leadership, participates on the state and national level in public policy activities that impact UWSN’s ability to fulfill its mission.

4. Manages the recruitment and development of a Board of Directors representative of the entire community including business and industry, government, labor, education, and health and human services.

5. Works with the board to identify and initiate appropriate responses to issues requiring policy decisions/actions and ensures implementation.

6. Works with Board, community, United Way Worldwide and/or other United Way chapters as well as internal and other stakeholders to formulate and implement strategies to address current and emerging conditions, opportunities, and problems.

7. Establishes processes and systems to monitor UWSN’s progress against the Strategic Plan and the Annual Work Plan, providing accountability at every level and addressing deficiencies on a rolling basis.

8. Staffs the organization with fully competent and diverse professionals, appropriately delegating responsibilities/authority.  Develops organizational work plan that includes appropriate accountability for results for each staff members’ position and monitors implementation.  Promotes continued professional development among staff and demonstrates and ensures cultural competency of managers and staff.

  • Creates and leads a culture that fosters the development of strong, effective teams; empowers staff through interpersonal trust and mutal respect, and involvement and participation in decision making.
  • Establishes and ensures that the organization maintains open and honest communication both internally and externally.

9. Manages and directs activities of professional staff consistent with the concept of the “full-service” United Way:

  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates UWSN fundraising programs, within the framework of the volunteer campaign structure and in accordance with the principles of United Way fund raising.
  • Maintains stewardship and accountability for financial and capital resources (including management of property), official records, operating budgets, and campaign collection and disbursement.
  • Develops effective, integrated and efficient support systems for the organization, including computer hardware/software services, staff and volunteer training, procurement, and personnel and building management.

 

Secondary Duties:

  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has direct reporting responsibilities for a staff of six to eight professionals.

 

Position Requirements:

To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must have:

  • Significant major gift fundraising and campaign experience with a proven record of successfully cultivating, soliciting and securing major gifts, including 6 and 7 figure commitments, and grants and leading organizations to major gift fundraising campaign success.
  • Proven leadership; an ability to foster development of a common vision for UWSN among volunteers, staff, human service providers, business leaders, and the community.
  • Enthusiastic team building, demonstrated by a history of creating a culture of accountability, trust and respect among staff that fosters personal investment, excellence, and a commitment to the goals of the organization.
  • Effective utilization of volunteer resources, with demonstrated skill in handling both leading and being led by volunteers.
  • Proven management skills, particularly in strategic planning, major gift fundraising campaigns, non-profit fiscal management, evaluation of personnel and programs and operating systems.
  • Superior presentation and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Experience in negotiation and collaboration, skill in developing effective partnerships, understanding of and commitment to community based collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in working with state and federal legislators on matters impacting UWSN goals and community programs.
  • A track record that indicates an ability to foster inclusiveness working with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to UWSN’s stewardship role in assisting people from varied situations to build a unique and caring community.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-million dollar budgets.

 

 

These requirements are met by any combination of education that typically includes post-graduate work; recent service in a senior level executive position; and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in a senior leadership position.  Proven fundraising results, with experience in implementing complex resource development strategies are needed.
