de Toledo High School has quickly grown into the second largest community Jewish High School in the US. We strive to help our students become leaders inside and outside the classroom using the values they learned while at dTHS.  Engaging co-curricular offerings which include our Global Jewish Education programs, Medical Science Academy, athletics, visual and performing arts, engineering, robotics, and a host of other exemplary programs allow dTHS students to explore, achieve, and thrive. Amongst the professional staff, all who are considered faculty at dTHS as we all teach our students, we have built a collegial and collaborative work environment whose sole focus is on delivering our mission.

The Director of Development is a member of the school’s senior leadership team and reports to the Head of School.  The Director of Development should be an experienced fundraiser and strategic thinker with a passion for educating Jewish students in a community day school environment. 

The position requires close interaction with the dTHS Board of Directors, major donors, community leaders, current and alumni parents, and volunteer leadership.  The Director of Development must be skilled at working in a collaborative environment with other senior leadership team members, staff, and faculty.  The position requires the ability to exercise a high level of discretion, confidentiality, and diplomacy. 

Strategic Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Head of School, Board of Directors, and CFOO to develop a long-term development vision, strategy, and plan for the school that meets annual and long-term fundraising goals, including support for special projects, capital projects, major gifts, annual giving, endowment campaigns, events, and planned giving.
  • Work with the Head of School, CFOO, and board leadership to prepare, update, and administer the annual Development budget.
  • Build a sustainable fundraising stream of varied resources to support the school’s mission that engages individual donors, administration, faculty, staff, alumni, grandparents, volunteers, supporters, corporations, foundations, and others.
  • Coordinate all fundraising activities for all dTHS constituents: Board members, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty/staff, friends, corporations, foundations, and others.

 Program Management Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, organization, and execution of special events to cultivate and recognize donors and to build ongoing relationships between dTHS and its Development constituents.
  • Responsible for all fundraising materials, including, but not limited to, solicitation and acknowledgment letters, persuasive and compelling funding proposals, annual reports to the community and foundations, case statements, donor collateral materials.
  • Identify prospective, new, and past individual and institutional donors to:
    • Cultivate relationships in an entrepreneurial fashion.
    • Manage an active pool of prospective donors in collaboration with the Head of School and Board Vice President of Development.
  • Analyze effectiveness of development efforts and make improvements accordingly.
  • Oversee the administration and operation of the donor database as a tool to manage the fundraising process including reporting systems.
  • Analyze the performance of the Development Program and its components and produces concise and informative reports to illustrate that performance.

Department and Staff Management Responsibilities:

  • Effectively manage Development Office/Department which currently consists of 3 direct reports in a way that creates harmonious teamwork, effective departmental and organizational communication, and maximum production from all employees resulting in a spirit of enthusiasm and continuous improvement.
  • Lead, evaluate, and supervise the Development staff in accordance with the school's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Ensure that the Development program is in compliance with current regulations, and tax laws governing charitable gift accounting administration and counsel senior leadership, Board of Directors, and volunteers on regulations and trends.
  • Oversee the effective management of charitable trusts, bequests and other charitable gift instruments, in conjunction with the CFOO, including thorough review of investment performance of charitable gift funds and production of periodic reports on the performance of the program.
  • Be an active and visible member of the school community through participation in school-wide events, meetings, student sporting events, art performances, theatre performances, open houses, graduation, etc.
  • In partnership and in collaboration with the Marketing and Admissions Departments, participate in a process for sharing of resources, ideas and information to accomplish goals requiring cross-functional collaboration. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Enthusiasm for mission and vision of de Toledo High School and strong commitment to embrace and promote its culture. 
  • Strong familiarity with independent school sector and/or the Jewish community. 
  • Self-motivating, entrepreneurial, and self-confident with a commitment to achieving fiscal goals.
  • Bachelor's degree minimum.  Advanced degree preferred or post BA professional development courses in fundraising and allied professions.
  • Minimum 8+ years' experience in development/fundraising/advancement with a proven track record of securing major gifts of $25,000+, including gifts at $1,000,000+. 
  • Proven skill and performance in all aspects of fund development including annual giving, individual giving, direct personal involvement in major gift solicitation, corporate and foundation giving, capital/endowment campaigns, and events. 
  • Experience working with a nonprofit Board of Directors.
  • Ability to facilitate the development of strategic fundraising plans and a vision for the long term.
  • Demonstrated skill in enlisting volunteers and coordinating their effort and energy towards the attainment of strategic goals.
  • Ability to conceive and implement creative donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies; commitment to growing, sustaining, and strengthening positive donor relations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with people at all levels and in all settings.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in developing and managing budgets with working knowledge of current legal and tax implications of soliciting, giving, accepting, and accounting for charitable gifts. 
  • Strong organizational skills sufficient to handle multiple projects, details, and deadlines simultaneously; strong ability to prioritize.
  • Exceptional leadership, management, supervision and motivational skills with ability to function well as the leader of a fully participative, engaged organization, fostering a trusting, collaborative, and respectful environment.
  • Involvement in the professional fundraising community.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, donor database systems (Raiser’s Edge is a plus), and web-based research services.
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced dynamic school environment. 
  • Unquestionable personal integrity, excellent judgment, sound instincts, diplomacy and patience.


Competitive salary (based on experience); 100% employer-paid medical and dental, plus 50% for 1 dependent; vision; an annual, generous 403(b) match; all Federal holidays plus up to 12 Jewish Holy Days paid per year; 4 weeks Paid Time Off.
