ABIC members include CEOs, retired CEOs, business associations, small business owners as well as hospitals and universities. ABIC works in partnership with diverse immigrant advocates to support pro-immigrant legislation at the state and federal levels. POSITION SUMMARY

ABIC is seeking a seasoned, politically astute and deeply passionate individual for the position of Communications Director.

 

Candidates must possess strong writing and organizational skills, a background in traditional and digital media, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines under the direction of the Deputy Director. Ideal candidates will have previous campaign and/or advocacy experience and a general familiarity with immigration policy. Candidates should also possess the skills necessary to communicate policy issues to diverse audiences through multiple platforms.

 

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Communications Strategy and Leadership 

 

    Working closely with ABIC’s Deputy Director, develop and drive communications strategy and narrative aligned with ABIC’s mission. 

 

    Tracking political landscape and developments in all federal and key states across the country, identifying potential opportunities for ABIC staff and members to interact with the press, and elevating their local and national voices. Drive creation of messaging and materials to disseminate to a variety of audiences to encourage and facilitate use of unified messages in campaigns.  Oversee all communications components, including media relations, digital campaigns, message research and development, and content creation, in support of field organizing, advocacy, and programmatic initiatives.  Be an active member of ABIC’s Senior Leadership Team including helping to build best organizational practices as the organization grows.  

 

Communications Operations 

 

    Create, edit, proofread, and disseminate materials for external use on tight deadlines, including e-blasts, social media content, organizational statements, press materials, op-eds, and more. Identify media, messaging, and marketing opportunities that advance ABIC’s work.  Organize virtual and in-person media events in coordination with ABIC staff and partners. Connect with business leaders across the country, including ABIC board members and prospective members, to maintain a diversity of perspectives on immigration messaging.  Initiate, develop, and maintain relationships with key local and national media contacts.  Respond to press inquiries; manage participation of ABIC staff and Board in media interviews; refer press to spokespersons outside ABIC when appropriate.  Coach ABIC spokespersons for interviews and press appearances and draft scripts and talking points. Maintain updated national media lists and local media lists for all ABIC state chapters. Oversee complete overhaul of the website and its state chapters website.  Help create and implement a social media strategy to grow and build an audience. Maintain list of ABIC media hits for dissemination to members, funders, and partners. Coordinate with outside vendors and consultants as needed, including videographers, graphic designers, print shops, etc.

 

Team Development and Management 

 

    Train and mentor growing communications team of two  Hire and onboard additional team members as needed  Train and mentor state teams on strategic communications, social media, press appearances, etc. as needed. Build and maintain strong relationships with organizational allies around campaign and political strategy.



EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

 

    Proven commitment to and an understanding of immigration policies.  Experience creating communications materials and strategy targeting varied audiences including conservative and policy-makers.  Strong understanding of national and state political and electoral landscape and how best to make strategic impact at scale. Significant communications, press, social media/digital organizing experience with a  minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a senior role and/or at minimum two election cycles in a senior role in either a candidate campaign(s), an advocacy organization, issue campaign, or a PAC, preferably managing large scale or statewide issue or political campaigns. Experience with managing teams, supporting strong morale, and developing staff. An independent and strong leader who is able to drive projects and programs to completion in a fast-paced environment based on the priorities established by ABIC Board and Executive Director. Commitment to coalition building to advance victories. Strong strategic and campaign planning skills and commitment to ongoing processes that ensure transparency and communication in carrying out the work. A strong ability to recruit and work closely with grasstops and grassroots leaders. Proficient with political data, polling, latest technologies, and best practices in the field, campaigns, and the ability to learn various systems for data tracking, email, mobile, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising. While travel has been put on hold due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, the Communications Director must be willing to travel domestically for 25-40% of their time under normal circumstances.
