The Director of Individual Giving works in the Advancement
Office at the National Air and Space and leads the team's major
gifts fundraising from individual donors. The Director serves as a
key member of the leadership staff and works with senior colleagues
and Board members from the Museum and around the Smithsonian to
meet ambitious fundraising goals for a variety of initiatives. The
Director of Individual Giving supervises the highly effective team
of major gift officers, as well as prospect management and support
staff. In addition, s/he manages their own portfolio of principal
gift donors and prospects, effectively engaging in all phases of
the fundraising process.
Successful candidates will demonstrate proven success in
securing 6 and 7 figure contributions from individual donors, as
well as effective fundraising management experience. Strong
organizational, relationship and communication skills and the
ability to work independently are essential.
A minimum of seven years of frontline fundraising experience in
increasingly responsible advancement leadership positions including
significant work in individual major gifts is required as well as a
passion for learning and exploration, and the desire to join a
dynamic and growing operation. Applications should demonstrate the
ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and direction
with at least five years of supervisory experience, including
experience creating and managing a budget. Experience working on
major fundraising campaigns and/or working in complex higher
education or a large cultural or environmental organization are
preferred. Travel is required and work during the evenings and
weekends may be necessary.
