Job Details

Under the direction of the Manager of Institutional Giving, the Institutional Giving Officer identifies, researches, and pursues grant funding opportunities to support, enhance, and expand Fenway Health programs, services, and initiatives across its three divisions: The Health Center, The Fenway Institute, and AIDS Action.

Representative Duties:

  1. Prospect Research and Identification
  • Conduct thorough corporate and foundation prospect research
  • Generate funder profiles on prospects and collaborate with Manager of Institutional Giving and program staff to find alignment with funding needs
  • Maintain ongoing record of potential prospects
  • Work with Manager of Institutional Giving to identify and prioritize new funding opportunities and new program areas to match Fenway’s strategic priorities
  • Strategize how to solicit proposal invitations from foundations as necessary
  • Contribute to management of the annual grants calendar

2. Proposal Development and Submission

  • Generate letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets, and other supporting materials necessary to submit proposals
  • Maintain broad knowledge and understanding of Fenway Health programs within all three divisions in order to effectively communicate our work to funders
  • Conduct ongoing public health research in order to develop compelling statements of need that highlight the impact of Fenway’s work
  • Collaborate with program directors, subject matter experts, and principal investigators to obtain all information and content necessary to present competitive proposals
  • Collaborate with data and evaluation team in order to present up to date, compelling data that strengthens Fenway’s case for funding
  • Ensure the complete and timely submission of proposals through effective project management as assigned

3. Reporting and Grant Administrative Requirements

  • Act as lead on all reporting requirements to foundations and other funders as needed
  • Develop and maintain system to track all reporting dates and requirements for each funded grant each year
  • Collaborate with data and evaluation team to collect necessary program data for reports in a timely fashion
  • Work with finance department to collect all required financial data for reporting purposes
  • Collaborate with program directors and principal investigators to create reporting narratives as necessary
  • Maintain corporate and foundation grant records in Raiser’s Edge

4. Meets agency participatory expectations

  • Adheres to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Health, or other relevant field; or equivalent experience
  • Outstanding writing skills, including the ability to be articulate, persuasive and compassionate in presenting a case for funding
  • Successful experience working in a highly deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • 2-3 years successful experience in a position that includes proposal preparation, writing, development, and submission to foundation, corporate, and/or government funders
  • Understanding of foundation policies, procedures and guidelines, and of business principles governing grant preparation and submission
  • In-depth skills in accessing electronic data resources, gathering and analyzing data for planning reports, funding and grant development, and composing and integrating information
  • Skills in Internet prospecting and research
  • Strong collaborative, diplomatic and problem-solving skills, including the ability to incorporate critical reviews and edits
  • Skills in developing proposal budgets preferred
  • Familiarity and facility with Raiser’s Edge or similar donor database preferred
  • Excellent team player
  • Familiarity and facility with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, and complete work accurately and in sufficient time for colleague review
  • A passion for the agency mission
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse work environment preferred
