August 3, 2021

Baltimore Hebrew Congregation

BHC is a community offering worship, life-long learning, support, social justice, and more for our over 1,000 member households and beyond.  Our congregational offerings span from those in our E.B. Hirsh Early Childhood Center to our oldest members.  We are recognized from being multifaceted, running from our founding in 1830 to our ground-breaking Rosh Hashanah Under the Stars.

Director of Development

Baltimore Hebrew Congregation is looking for a Director of Development who is both self-motivated and excited about motivating volunteers and staff to further the fundraising and communal goals of our congregation.  The Director of Development is the lead staff member in developing and implementing our development strategy.  This position reports to the Executive Director and collaborates with our clergy and staff.  The Director of Development recruits and supports lay leaders and volunteers involved in BHC’s development initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

The Director of Development will focus on the following areas, in concert with congregants and staff:

  • Goals and Strategy: Develop annual and multi-year strategies and timelines to achieve the congregation’s fundraising goals. The initial primary development areas follow:
  • Annual Giving Campaign: Plan and implement our Annual Giving campaign, including preparing campaign materials, coordinating solicitations, and tracking and recognizing donors.
  • Planned Giving: Develop, maintain, and communicate Planned Giving opportunities.
  • Special Project: Develop and coordinate ongoing and special projects, such as the Annual Night of the Stars and Donor Garden Parties.
  • Stewardship: Coordinate and participate in cultivating donors, establishing congregational funds, and coordinating clergy, staff and leadership relationships with potential donors.
  • Grant Applications and Writing: The Director of Development assists other staff members and occasionally volunteers in applying for grants, including applying and reporting.

Additional Responsibilities

Write and coordinate development communications, together with Director of Communications, including on regular congregational communications platforms, such as the website and bulletin.

  • Research grant opportunities and guide and assist staff in pursuing and writing applications.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings, as needed, both to report and to understand the workings of the lay leadership.
  • Collaborate with other staff on a wide range of congregational opportunities.
  • If the congregation were to enter into a Capital Campaign, the Director of Development would be expected to guide and support the initial stages of the campaign and to be part of executing the full campaign.
  • Be involved with and support the annual budgeting process.
  • Maintain appropriate reporting, tracking and acknowledgment of all gifts.
  • Produce ongoing reporting in relation to existing congregational funds.
