Departmental Overview

The College Relations & Development unit at the College of Chemistry develops and executes alumni relations and fundraising events, communications, and activities to engage the College's 15,000 + alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. The College Relations & Development Team consists of 8 full-time staff members that develop and implement the College's major gift fundraising, annual giving programs and campaigns, gift/fund admin and donor acknowledgements and stewardship, marketing and communications, volunteer programs, and events. The College Relations & Development Team annually raises 4,000+ donations totaling $15+ million in support for the College of Chemistry.

The Associate Director of Leadership Support will primarily work on identifying, engaging, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding alumni with the capacity to annually give $1,000 to $100,000+ to the College of Chemistry. The Associate Director will be part of the College Relations & Development Team and collaborate closely with the Major Giving and Alumni Relations staff, but will work fairly independently to develop and manage a portfolio of prospects consisting of 200-300 donors (alumni, parents and friends), with the objective of annually completing 200+ significant moves (defined as meaningful interactions that move a prospect closer to making a significant gift to the College of Chemistry) and 100+ solicitations for gifts of $2,500+ to the College. Ultimately the Associate Director will be expected to annually raise $350,000+ for the College of Chemistry's annual funds, annually increasing support of the College's annual funds by 10%-30%, and to qualify 2-5 prospects on their potential to be major gifts donors.


Responsibilities

Frontline Fundraising/Prospect Outreach:
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership prospects for increased levels of annual support or special gifts to the College of Chemistry during the fiscal year, with a special focus on raising unrestricted support. Measures of success:
  • Attempts to personally contact all tracked prospects 3-5 times by the end of the fiscal year on June 30th.
  • Submits a contact report stating the final results of attempted outreach and/or solicitations for all tracked prospects by June 30th.
  • Manages a prospect portfolio of 200-300 prospects.
  • Conducts 120-175 visits, via phone or in-person, resulting in a solicitation/decision by June 30th.
  • Following visits, submits a contact report within one week stating the details and results of the each visit/solicitation.
  • Conducts additional cultivation and stewardship visits as necessary.
  • Collaborates and partners with Major Gift Officers, Annual Giving Officers, Gift Administration, Stewardship, Institutes/Centers, University Relations and campus Development Officers as necessary to ensure all tracked prospects are adequately engaged, solicited, and stewarded.
  • Directly or indirectly secure $350,000+ in unrestricted support and annually increases giving among personally and shared tracked prospects by 10-30%.
  • Directly or indirectly increases donor participation among tracked prospects by 2-5%.
  • Identifies 2-5 new major and/or planned gift prospects, and facilitates the relationship between the prospect and the appropriate Major Gift Officer and/or Planned Gift Officer.
  • Tracks all outreach and results in CADS.

Program Management:
  • Serves as the lead or in a support role in managing various programs directed towards further engaging and cultivating our alumni for increased financial support, including recent graduates as Chemistry Ambassadors, movers & shakers as Alumni Board members and Berkeley Ecosystem speakers and panelists, and mentors and corporate liaisons of our Chemistry Alumni Mentorship Program (CAMP).
  • Professional Development:

Proactively manages the development of professional skills, experience & network, and career growth Measure of success:
  • Shadows 1-2 different AGOs & 1-2 MGOs on a prospect visit.
  • Participates in frontline fundraising and volunteer management trainings.
  • Conducts benchmarking of peers to identify best practices (as needed).
  • Continues to develop fundraising network (FRC, APF, CASE, etc.)
  • Builds further awareness/comprehension of the College of Chemistry and its two departments and various programs.
  • Builds further collaboration with University Relations & College's Program Offices.
  • Participates in any additional technical trainings (as needed).
  • Develops verbal & writing communication skills, including negotiations and group facilitation trainings/course.
  • Expands knowledge of planned giving.
  • Works on special programs as assigned.
  • Attends classes which will enhance expertise in job areas.
  • Serves on departmental and campus-wide committees as appropriate.
  • Participates in activities that enhance the campus community and/or larger community to further University service.
  • Maintains knowledge of the Development & Alumni Relations unit business processes in order to provide back up to other support staff in the unit.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising, donor relations, or business development concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to articulate a compelling case for annual discretionary support for higher education, as well as the rationale and goals of a leadership giving program.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail.
  • Available for some evening and weekend work.
  • Able to occasionally travel (predominantly within California, with occasional out-of-state domestic travel) and work week nights and weekends.
  • Ability to use standard computer office/business technologies, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google (E-Mail, Calendar & Drive), Customer Relationship Management/Donor Databases (Salesforce, Razor's Edge, etc.)
  • Thorough working knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Thorough written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationship at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
  • Thorough project management skills.
  • Skills, ability and motivation to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in fundraising/business development.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and motivating leadership level prospects and donors.
  • Demonstrated experience in personally soliciting gifts of $10,000 or more from individuals.
  • 5+ years of experience in higher education fundraising in a personal (face-to-face/frontline) fundraising role for leadership level gifts of $10,000 or greater.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and have appreciation for UC Berkeley and the College of Chemistry's mission, history and goals.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $80,000.00 - $100,000.00.
