Position Description

The Vice President for Advancement at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) will be responsible for strengthening relationships with external and internal constituents through stewardship, communications, media relations, social media, marketing, alumni relations, special events and other programs.  This is an exceptional opportunity to join an evolving leadership team and play a central role in enhancing the visibility and fundraising capabilities of an amazing institution. The VP will build a development operation to advance the College’s fundraising program to the next level and ensure that all outreach, marketing, communications, and development strategies support growth and long-term financial stability.  The individual will direct the overall operational strategies and efforts to promote a culture of philanthropy and the institutional core values and historic identity to support the College’s mission and vision.  The VP will be expected to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for Advancement and the Foundation, build the operational infrastructure and capacity to increase market reach, enhance the student access and experience, and improve affordability.  The position also has responsibility for the College’s radio station (91.5 WBJC) and will collaborate on strategic outreach efforts and approaches to effectively benefit both the College and its constituent/listening audience. Reporting directly to the President of the College, the VP is expected to use extraordinary judgement and reflect the highest degree of personal and professional integrity.

 

Leadership and Management

  • Promotes a broad understanding and awareness of the College’s mission and programs;
  • Enhances the operations and strengthens productivity in the areas of advancement, annual fund, major gifts, corporate and Foundation relations, planned giving and alumni relations;
  • Works closely with the President in all phases of advancement and campaign leadership activities;
  • Serves as a member of President’s Cabinet to represent the division in the development, implementation, and evaluation of institutional plans, goals and strategies;
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan to include news/media relations, marketing communications/publications, special events, and web interactive communications;
  • Creates and executes fundraising plans that utilize best practices for annual, major and planned gift programs;
  • Seeks and cultivates partnerships to enhance the mission and services of the College;
  • Maintains an active and engaging presence in the advancement profession to maintain visibility for the College;
  • Ensure institutional compliance with federal, state, agency and other applicable governing regulations;

Advancement and Strategic Planning

  • Develops a comprehensive Institutional Development Plan in concert with the Strategic goals of the College;
  • Develops an annual budget and recommends fundraising goals linked to the priorities of the division and the College;
  • Strengthens the operational role of the Foundation Board and the level of fundraising collaboration among the College leadership teams;
  • Defines and negotiates complex partnerships agreements that mutually benefit both BCCC and its partners (e.g., academic, private or public sector);
  • Projects an executive presence and delivers professional presentations to potential donor and partner organizations;
  • Identifies new strategic initiatives that could provide benefit from corporate, government, four-year institutions, or other partnerships;
  • Develops and manages the execution of partnership relationships that achieve business results and drives value for employers and students;

BCCC Foundation

  • Serves as an ex officio member of the Foundation Board;
  • Works with the President and the Board Chair to refine the Bylaws and operations relating to the interrelationship between the Foundation and the College;
  • Ensures timely and accurate updates of progress and information are provided to the President and the Foundation Board ;
  • Ensures that division activities are consistent with the Foundation’s goals;
  • Develops relationships with key donors and develops strategies that secure major gifts and donations to the College;
  • Formulates implementation strategies to recommend short-term and multi-year fundraising plans for the Foundation;
  • Maintains the Foundation portfolio and collaborates with the President and Board Chair on the direction for the growth and management of the Foundation’s financial assets;

Marketing and Communications

  • Oversees the planning and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan;
  • Oversees the BCCC brand management to build brand equity and the development of a strategic communications plan;
  • Provides leadership in the development and placement of College advertising;
  • Fosters a culture of quality service to internal customers in the development of marketing materials and College publications;
  • Provides consultation to the President and Cabinet on communication and public relations matters;
  • Oversees the collection, distribution and analysis of statistical data to drive performance;
  • Ensures the implementations of media/public relations programs and plans that competitively position the College;

Community and Alumni Engagement

  • Maintains ongoing support, communications and the commitment of leaders from all sectors of the community;
  • Builds and grows a network model and volunteer structure that supports Alumni engagement to promote the College;
  • Creates short and long-term strategies aimed at increasing lifelong engagement between Alumni and the College;
  • Identifies opportunities to infuse pride in the College brand to create a visible Alumni network;
  • Oversees the technology infrastructure to establish and maintain an Alumni database, which provides accurate and complete records;

The successful candidate will be innovative, strategic and share a commitment to the mission and values of the College and the Foundation. The individual should be a strong starter with the creative confidence and spirit to bring and develop new approachesA bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required; an advanced degree preferred. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership as a senior level and performance driven advancement professional in higher education is also preferred (college advancement, foundations, marketing and communications, and/or alumni relations); must show a  demonstrated record of leadership and accomplishments in advancement with a proven track record of fundraising/gift success, campaign planning and major gift solicitations from individuals and organizations; possess the ability to work collaboratively and build a local network of relationships with key constituents; possess well-developed public speaking, writing and campaign communication skills; demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, diplomacy and integrity to build and maintain trusting relationships with staff, volunteers and donors; possess a strong motivation to meet goals and increase capital, major, annual and planned giving; capacity to support and grow the College’s branding initiatives; possess energy and creative ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and develop solutions to complex problems in a fast-paced environment; and be comfortable helping to lead and set the tone for “a new day” and operating within a culture of change.
