The Getty Foundation fulfills the philanthropic mission of the Getty Trust by supporting individuals and institutions committed to advancing the greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts in Los Angeles and throughout the world. Through strategic grant initiatives, the Foundation strengthens art history as a global discipline, promotes the interdisciplinary practice of conservation, increases access to museum and archival collections, and develops current and future leaders in the visual arts. The Program Officer oversees the development and administration of grants within one or more broad areas of expertise, including initiatives that advance art history and museum practice domestically and internationally.

 

We are looking for a Program Officer to join our team, contribute to our ongoing strategic initiatives, develop new initiatives in alignment with the mission of the Foundation, and collaborate with colleagues across Getty. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following fields: library and archives, leadership development, museums, and digital art history/digital humanities. The Program Officer will have the opportunity to contribute to emerging strategic funding initiatives, including an initiative designed to support archives relating to African American art history and an initiative to support professional and leadership development of alumni of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program. Flexibility and intellectual curiosity will be important assets as this position is expected to work across the fields we serve.

Major Job Responsibilities
  • Identifies needs in the fields that we serve in consultation with experts; develops, implements, and manages guidelines for strategic grant initiatives.

  • Works directly with potential grantees to develop proposals, oversees review and award processes, and monitors the progress of awarded grants.

  • Advises applicants and maintains extensive contact with Getty senior staff and organizations involved in related areas.

  • Evaluates grant effectiveness and participates in policy development and the development of new grant categories.

Qualifications

Terminal degree in field of expertise. 7-10 years of experience in library, archive, museum, university, or arts non-profit settings. Recognized for expertise in the field and ability to apply extensive knowledge and content specialization. Grantmaking experience preferred but not required.

  • Excellent critical thinking, organization, and management skills

  • Excellent social skills to work effectively with a wide range of applicants, grantees, outside advisors, and other experts 

  • Content knowledge of traditions and trends in the fields associated with grant initiatives of the Foundation

  • Ability to apply extensive knowledge and content expertise
