Responsibilities

The Associate Director of Development (ADD) is a key member of the Brookings Metro development team, with principal responsibility to identify, meet with, and qualify/cultivate interest in the Program, working with the Senior Director of Development (SDD) to ensure increased giving from new donors. In collaboration with the SDD, Brookings Metro’s scholars, projects, and centers, the ADD will identify and cultivate funding prospects, write grant proposals and reports, and steward relationships with existing and prospective funders. In addition, the Associate Director will work closely with the SDD on the implementation and execution of Metro at 25 campaign.

Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship (80%)

• Help drive organizational success by developing and managing a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects who have the capacity to make multi-year commitments of six figures and above, including an annual “Top 25” pool of prospective major gift donors to support the Metro at 25 Campaign.
• In collaboration with the senior director of development (SDD), identify and cultivate the prospects pipeline required to meet major giving targets.
• Work with scholars and other programmatic leaders to develop cultivation plans that lead to solicitations and close gifts.
• With SDD’s guidance, plan a comprehensive stewardship strategy for donor portfolio, including customized outreach, event invitations, and special projects.
• Actively manage the stewardship and renewal process for major donors, coordinate efforts with Brookings Metro staff, and follow up with donor representatives.
• Ensure the readability and voice in development materials is consistent and of high quality, including adherence to individual funder guidelines, interests, and programs.
• Take the initiative to present new funding opportunities to program staff, identifying the new prospect and suggesting how their interests and priorities match Brookings Metro’s scholars’ work.
• Help develop a system that ensures reporting requirements and key deliverables for donors are met; work collaboratively with various Brookings Metro staff to ensure high quality of reporting.
• Prepare the SDD, program Vice President, scholars, or other program leadership for donor and prospect visits and interactions, including producing briefings and cultivation materials.
• Stay current on relevant foundation news, trends, and priorities related to key funders and provide relevant information to key staff as needed.

Development Strategy and Operations (20%)

• Assist the senior director of development (SDD) in developing a strategy for Metro at 25 Campaign.
• Maintain understanding of Brookings Metro scholars and initiative’s impact goals, research agendas, and fundraising needs.
• Assist SDD and program Vice President in developing funding plans for scholar and initiative agendas, including setting annual fundraising goals. Ensure goals are reached.
• Strategize on mitigating future financial risks and shortfalls.
• Regularly report to SDD and program leadership on key fundraising activities and status.
• Maintain understanding of US economic condition and how they may provide fundraising and cultivation opportunities or challenges for Brookings Metro; monitor philanthropic trends as they relate to Brookings Metro’s work.
• Collaborate with colleagues from other research programs oand Central Development on fundraising efforts, including producing institution-wide proposals.
• Serve as a mentor to the Development Officer,
• Effectively and proactively utilize Salesforce and Raiser’s Edge to maintain records of contacts with donors and prospects.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of six years of relevant development experience required. Demonstrated experience identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and regularly closing six- and seven-figure gifts required, as well as experience developing major funding proposals and delivering stewardship-forward funder reports. Demonstrated experience developing and working with a diverse set of donors and internal constituents required. Familiarity with the impact model of an economic and/or social policy organization preferred. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Expertise in funder cultivation and management, with a track record of success in securing significant funding from foundations, corporations, and/or individuals supporting large, multi-stakeholder initiatives. Ability to absorb and grasp new information quickly, including programming landscape, funding landscape, and relevant research and impact, and to distill this information in compelling prose for a variety of audiences. Ability to form and sustain strong, productive relationships with funding partners and external experts, as well as internal colleagues. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to deliver highest-quality independent work product in a consultative, highly-collaborative, and team-focused environment. Fluency with current technology, including Raiser’s Edge and Sales Force. Ability and willingness to learn new tools and systems quickly. Flexibility, unflappability, and humor.
