The Global Economy and Development program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate on how to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. The program's research agenda is related to policies and trends affecting developing countries including global poverty, universal education, the global middle class, fragile states, globalization, inequality, foreign assistance and development effectiveness.

Responsibilities

The Development Officer is a member of a four-person development team and develops and implements strategies to raise funds and manage donor relations for the Global Economy and Development program (“Global”). Reporting to the Director of Development, and in coordination the Global's Vice President, Global scholars, and the Central Development team (DEV), this officer manages, prioritizes, and carries out Global fundraising activities and provides stewardship, focusing on corporate and individual donors.

Fundraising and Donor Relations (60%)

  • Works in coordination with the Director of Development, Global's Vice President, and scholars to create and implement fundraising goals and strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward individual, corporate, foundation, government, and other donors, focusing on individual and corporate donors that provide core and/or unrestricted support to the program and its centers;
  • In partnership with the Director of Development, creates and executes prospecting and engagement strategies for the Global Leadership Council (GLC), a volunteer leadership group of individual and corporate donors that provide unrestricted support to Global.
  • Supports fundraising for Global's other councils: the Center for Universal Education (CUE) Leadership Council and Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) Council.
  • Identifies fundraising opportunities and researches new prospects for support; assesses the potential and capacity of existing and prospective donors.
  • Moves donors through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process, including meeting personally with donors, identifying and arranging meetings with Brookings scholars, preparing talking points and briefings, managing correspondence, and serving as the key contact for gift agreement processes.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in Central DEV and from other research programs on fundraising efforts, including assistance with producing multi-program or institution-wide proposals that include the work of Global scholars.
  • Writes concept notes, solicitation letters, and proposals, and supports scholars on assembling relevant proposal materials. Coordinates content in collaboration with scholars and edits documents to ensure high quality, readability, a consistent voice, and adherence to individual donor guidelines, interests, and programs.

Tasks in Support of Fundraising (25%)

  • Maintains complete files on fundraising activity in Raiser's Edge, including correspondence with donors, meeting notes, proposals, and background information.
  • Partners with Global scholars and program staff to track deliverables, manages grant modifications or special reporting needs, and liaises with the funders if modifications or extensions are needed. Works with the Director to track the progress of Global scholars toward completing tasks consistent with commitments made to funders.
  • Participates in drafting of public documents on the Global program, as well as other communications tools that are needed for effective outreach.
  • Coordinates prospects, fundraising activities, and risk/compliance management with the Institution's Central Development (“DEV”) office and participates in meetings with DEV, Global's finance team, and others throughout Brookings to coordinate activities and/or discuss programmatic direction.
  • Maintains understanding of Global economic issues and developments and how they may affect and provide fundraising opportunities for Global. Monitors philanthropic trends as they relate generally to Global's work. Maintains an overview and understanding of several research projects within Global.
  • Works with scholars and staff, and drafts and/or directs the production of stewardship reports for individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

Event Coordination (15%)

  • Plans and executes small-to-medium (10 to 50 participant) high-level donor cultivation events, including regular GLC meetings, panel discussions, and private social gatherings—including occasional events after regular business hours or off-site. Currently all donor cultivation events are virtual, but this role will include in-person event planning when it is safe to do so.
  • Arranges internal and external room/space reservations and catering, coordinates event logistics, and prepares event-related materials;
  • Coordinates event invitations and follow-up communications;
  • Prepares and provides briefing materials to Global leadership, scholars, and Executive Office members ahead of their participation in events;
  • Greets and facilitates interaction between donors at events and meetings, as needed.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred in international relations, development, or a related field. Minimum of six years of relevant fundraising experience required (preferably within an international, non-profit organization). Experience with volunteer leadership management, event management, and direct solicitation from donors at the $25,000 level or higher, preferred. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

The successful candidate will share our passion for identifying solutions to international development, global poverty and economic issues. Familiarity with research-oriented work environments preferred. Superior oral and written communication skills required, including proven ability to successfully identify, steward, and solicit individual and corporate donors—especially through volunteer leadership councils and events. Mastery of Microsoft Office (MS) Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point) required; knowledge of Raiser's Edge a plus. Capacity to learn other types of software programs; familiarity with on-line research resources. Familiarity with budgeting or demonstrated capacity to learn. Experience with monitoring and evaluation processes, such as the development of results frameworks, desired. Must possess ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines; ability to work well with others; initiative; discretion; mature judgment; entrepreneurial spirit; and professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals.
