REPORTS TO: Chief Development Officer (CDO)

ABOUT KESEM:

We are a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with innovative, fun-filled programs that foster a lasting community.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Kesem seeks a highly experienced Director of Distinguished Events to oversee Kesem’s national high end fundraising events – historically generating annual revenue in excess of $2.0 million. The Director of Distinguished Events will have responsibility for overall event strategy, recruitment of event leadership (individuals with influence and affluence), engagement of event boards in outreach to their connections, event board communication, cultivation and outreach to distinguished donors, sponsorship solicitation and management, event planning and logistics, guest experience oversight, auction development and fulfillment, revenue management, donor stewardship and data oversight.

Kesem’s Values

The Director of Distinguished Events must uphold and build a culture that continues to support and strengthen the following core values:

We are optimistic.  We leave a lasting and positive impact.  We empower others.  We care deeply about the work we do.  We are grateful.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Kesem’s Director of Distinguished Events will be responsible for:

Overall Event Strategy.  The Director of Distinguished Events will continually evaluate Kesem’s events strategy and, in coordination with the CDO, update and modify the strategy to increase events-based revenue and profitability.
Event Board Leadership Recruitment.  The person holding this position will ensure that Leadership is in place for all Event Boards.  Leadership volunteers should be those with influence and affluence in their community and have the ability to put their team around the table to effectively meet or surpass the event goal.
Event Board Communication and Outreach. Each of our events is supported by a local Event Board. The Director of Distinguished Events will be responsible for establishing a communications and meeting calendar for each Event Board, and overseeing all regular communication. The Director of Distinguished Events will also be responsible for coordinating Event Board stewardship and expansion - as directed by, and in collaboration with, the CEO and the CDO.
Sponsorship Solicitation and Management. Corporate, foundation and individual sponsorships are critical components of Kesem’s events. The Director of Distinguished Events will have responsibility for coordinating all sponsorship outreach (either directly, through national or local event board members, or through Kesem’s Development team staff when appropriate). The Director of Distinguished Events will have ultimate responsibility for securing all event sponsors, in compliance with the individual event budget.
Event Planning and Logistics. Oversee and manage Kesem’s Events Manager, and be ultimately responsible for managing all aspects of venues, contractors, and service providers for all events.
Guest Experience Oversight. The success of all Kesem events - regardless of size - is the successful integration of thoughtful and well-designed programming and guest experiences. Our goal is that every Kesem event leaves our guests feeling a deep sense of personal connection to our cause. The Director of Distinguished Events will be responsible for working with the CDO and the Kesem Brand Department to create all aspects of guest experiences and ensure that all individual elements of the guest experience and programming are assigned points of responsibility.
Auction Development and Fulfillment. The Director of Distinguished Events will have responsibility for the development and securing of auction packages with the guidance of the CDO. Responsibilities include detailed documentation of the individual components of each auction package and all aspects of auction package fulfillment with winning donors.
Revenue Management. The Director of Distinguished Events is responsible for the tracking of all event receivables and for coordinating - with the Events Manager - our plans and schedule for all receivables follow-up. The Director of Distinguished Events will champion all internal conversations for strategies with lingering receivables.
Donor Stewardship. The Director of Distinguished Events will have responsibility for all personalized donor stewardship related Distinguished Events throughout the year. Because many individual and corporate event donors are Kesem supporters beyond our events, it will be critical to coordinate with other members of the Development Department on all stewardship efforts with individuals, corporations and foundations to eliminate any duplication of efforts.
Database Oversight.  The Director of Distinguished Events will play a critical role in the maintenance and upkeep of donor files associated with events, in collaboration with Development Department team members. The Director of Distinguished Events will be responsible for complying with all data standards and procedures set forth by the organization.
Inter-Departmental Event Coordination. All Kesem events include integration of college student volunteers, alumni, and sometimes campers and camper parents. All Kesem events involve Kesem’s Brand Team and Kesem’s Finance Department. The Director of Distinguished Events will be responsible for all ongoing communication with these constituents and departments (as well as play the team captain for all event internal meetings).
Chapter Event Support. Kesem’s 130+ college chapters hold at least one large annual fundraising event locally. The Director of Distinguished Events will provide support and guidance (i.e., a “Best Practices Training Manual”) to be used by chapters to ensure that their local benefit events mirror Kesem’s approved event format.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree preferred;  10+ years in nonprofit fundraising experience with a minimum of 6+ years in Distinguished events strategic planning and implementation. Experience working with event boards and volunteers/donors who have influence and affluence. Experience directly soliciting individuals and institutions. Experience working with enterprise-level databases; Salesforce experience preferred. Passion for and commitment to Kesem’s mission. Experience developing and monitoring adherence to complex project budgets. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to establish strategic direction, identify and plan projects and monitor progress towards specified outcomes. Ability to work and collaborate with others effectively in a remote environment. Excellent writing, speaking and communication skills. Comfortable with public speaking to small and large groups. Superior attention to detail and excellent follow-through.

Job Environment:

The Director of Distinguished Events role is a full-time and remote position, with responsibilities that require at least 40 hours of work per week, with some weeks requiring more. It is expected that the Director of Distinguished Events will be available for staff calls, meetings, vendor meetings, and committee calls, which may occur outside of normal work hours.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is $81,000 - $104,000 and placement on this range is based on relevant professional experience in a similar career level role.  In addition, Kesem offers a benefits package for full-time employees including employer-subsidized health benefits, employee-funded dental and vision benefits, employee-funded 403(b) retirement plan, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a healthcare concierge service, flexible work scheduling, telecommuting, paid time off (PTO), Short-Term Disability, and parental leave offerings.

Location:

The Director of Distinguished Events will work remotely from their home office in the United States, with a preference for candidates living in Kesem’s major markets (Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston).  However, candidates in other large metropolitan areas (with access to a major airport) will be considered. The Director of Distinguished Events must be able to travel extensively. On average, the Director of Distinguished Events should expect to travel 12-14 times per year, all within the United States. Kesem currently holds two large fundraising events and two medium size fundraising events annually.
