Position Title: Executive Director

Reports to:  Board of Directors

Location: Remote (within Mississippi)

Salary Range: $90,000-$120,000

 

 Job Summary:

 The Executive Director (“ED”) serves as chief executive of Excel By 5, Inc. ("Excel By 5"), a community based non-profit focused on the development and well-being of children ages 0-5, and, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of Excel By 5. Together, the Board and ED assure Excel By 5's relevance to the community, the accomplishment of Excel By 5's mission and vision, and the accountability of Excel By 5 to its diverse constituents.

 

The Board delegates responsibility for management and day-to-day operations of Excel By 5 to the ED, and s/he has the authority to carry out these responsibilities, in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board. The ED provides direction and enabling to the Board as it carries out its governance functions.

 

Generally, the ED is expected to fulfill the following requirements: a. Plans and implements programs; b. Establishes strong and appropriate relationships with Board, committees, volunteers, staff, donors and communities; c. Effectively secure financial and other resources sufficient to conduct and grow the business of Excel By 5; d. Plans and meets deadlines; e. Maintains a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of the job (hours may be long and irregular); f. Conveys a professional and positive image and attitude regarding Excel By 5 and the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors; g. Demonstrates commitment to continued professional growth and development; and h. Develops smooth and constructive relationships with executive colleagues, outside agencies, organizations and individuals.

 

Accountabilities

 

  1. Legal Compliance
    1. Assures the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitors compliance with relevant laws and

 

  • Mission, Policy, and Planning
    1. Helps the Board determine Excel By 5's values, mission, vision, and short- and long-term
    2. Helps the Board monitor and evaluate Excel By 5's relevancy to the community, its effectiveness, and its
    3. Keeps the Board fully informed on the condition of Excel By 5 and on all the important factors influencing it:
  • Identifies problems and opportunities and addresses them; brings those which are appropriate to the Board and/or its committees; and, facilitates discussion and deliberation.
  • Informs the Board and its committees about trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy-making. Recommends policy positions.
    1. Keeps informed of developments in human services, not-for-profit management and governance, philanthropy and fund raising.
  •  

  • Fundraising/Resource Development
    1. Assures an effective fundraising program by serving as the chief development officer or hiring and supervising an individual responsible for this
      1. Helps guide and enable the Board, its fundraising committee(s) and its individual Board members to participate actively in the fundraising process.
      2. Helps the Board and its fundraising committee design, implement and monitor a viable fundraising plan, policies and procedures.
    • Participates actively in identifying, cultivating and soliciting donor prospects.
    1. Assures the availability of materials to support solicitation.
    2. Assures the development and operation of gift management systems and reports for quality decision-making.
  • Management and Administration
    1. Provides general oversight of all Excel By 5 activities, manages the day-to-day operations, and assures a smoothly functioning, efficient
    2. Assures program quality and organizational stability through development and implementation of standards and controls, systems and procedures, and regular
    3. Assures a work environment that recruits, retains and supports quality staff and volunteers. Assures process for selecting, development, motivating and evaluating staff and
    4. Recommends staffing and financing to the Board of Directors. In accordance with Board action, recruits personnel, negotiates professional contracts, and sees that appropriate salary structures are developed and
    5. Specifies accountabilities for management personnel (whether paid or volunteer) and evaluates performance
  •  

  • Governance
    1. Helps the Board articulate its own role and accountabilities and that of its committees and individual members, and helps evaluate performance
    2. Works with the Board Chair to enable the Board to fulfill its governance functions and facilitates the optimum performance by the Board, its committees and individual Board members.
    3. With the Board Chair, focuses Board attention on long-range strategic
    4. Manages the Board's due diligence process to assure timely attention to core
    5. Works with the Board officers and committee chairs to get the best thinking and involvement of each Board member and to stimulate each Board member to give his or her
    6. Recommends volunteers to participate in the Board and its

  • Financing
    1. Promotes programs and services that are produced in a cost-effective manner, employing economy while maintaining an acceptable level of
    2. b) Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting and
    3. c) Works with Board to ensure financing to support short- and long-term
  •            

  • Community Relations
    1. Facilitates the integration of Excel By 5 into the fabric of the community by using effective marketing and communications
    2. Acts as an advocate, within the public and private sectors, for issues relevant to Excel By 5, its services and
    3. Listens to volunteers, donors and the individual communities in order to improve services and generate community involvement. Assures community awareness of Excel By 5's response to community
    4. Serves as chief spokesperson for Excel By 5, and assuring proper representation of Excel By 5 to the
    5. Initiates, develops, and maintains cooperative relationships with key
    6. Works with legislators, regulatory agencies, volunteers and representatives of the not- for-profit sector to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy community and address the issues of Excel By 5's

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

     

    This is a position based on full responsibility for Excel By 5 operations. Handles detailed, complex concepts and problems, balances multiple tasks simultaneously, and makes rapid decisions regarding administrative issues.

     

    Travel Requirements: Approx. 25% (local/statewide). Use of a personal vehicle for travel will be reimbursed at the prevailing federal mileage reimbursement rate.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a senior management position. It also preferred that this individual has at least 5 years of volunteer or professional experience in Early Childhood Development and known as a champion in the field.  As ED, this individual demonstrates critical competencies in four broad categories: commitment to results, business savvy, leading change, and motivating. 

     

    Commitment to results:  The ED is a systems thinker who is focused and goal driven. This individual identifies relevant information and helps transform this information into individual and organizational knowledge and learning. The ED is action oriented and innovative. S/he translates broad goals into achievable steps. S/he anticipates and solves problems and takes advantage of opportunities, is a self-starter and team player.

     

    Business savvy: As Excel By 5’s leader, this position requires an individual with knowledge of and experience in management and administration.  The position requires demonstrated experience integrating and coordinating diverse areas of management.

     

    • Knowledge in the following areas is required: human services, finance and personnel; oral and written communications; planning and evaluation; and governance.
    • Some experience in the field of philanthropy, not-for-profit management and governance, and community relations is preferred.
    • A high level of personal skills is required to make formal, persuasive presentations to groups and to deal effectively with people from all segments of the community.
    • The individual must be comfortable with diversity and respectful of a wide range of faiths, beliefs and experiences.

     

    Proven fundraiser: The ED is a proven not-for-profit fundraiser, with the skills, business acumen, and knowledge to secure fiscal resources needed to support the work of Excel By 5 and grow the organization.  The ED stays aware of current macro and micro trends in philanthropic giving and is able to translate that knowledge into successful fundraising.

     

    Leading change:  The ED possesses the skills and implements the functions of a leader. S/he shares Excel By 5’s values, mission and vision. S/he consistently displays integrity, models behavior, develops people, and build teams. This individual deals effectively with demanding situations and designs and implements interventions.

     

    Motivating: The ED manages continuity, change and transition. This individual knows how to influence and enable others. S/he addresses the impact of attitude and action on Excel By 5 and its communities.
