This position will report to the Vice President of Philanthropy, Baystate Health (BH)/Executive Director, Baystate Health Foundation (BHF). The Director of Major Gifts will, working with the Vice President of Philanthropy, design and direct major and principal gift philanthropic initiatives and programs in support of Baystate Health – all of its hospitals, entities, and programs, with a primary focus on Baystate Medical Center. The Director will work with the senior members of the BHF team to create and implement plans to build and sustain a culture of philanthropy in support of BH and cultivate relationships to move donors from initial gifts to ongoing active donor status, focusing on potential donors for major gifts for BH. 

The Director will play a leadership role in increasing short and long-term support for the health system and in building a prospect and donor base capable of supporting philanthropic activities and future campaigns. The Director will play a significant role in planning and implementing a comprehensive campaign. The Director will manage a portfolio of major and principal giving prospects and donors, and develop and propose plans and solicitation strategies for individual prospects and for projects as they arise. The Director provides leadership and supervision to the Philanthropy Officers and Prospect Researcher. The Director of Major Gifts will closely partner with the Gift Planning Director in crafting strategies for planned gift and blended gifts (combination of outright and planned gift vehicles) conversations and solicitations.

Responsibilities

1) Responsible for cultivating donors to the Foundation and working with them to consider multiple gifts over time and to ensure their satisfaction with their contributions. Develop and implement strategies to build and maintain strong relationships with donors and prospects, leading to the successful cultivation, solicitation, and closure of multi-year and major gifts, resulting in donor satisfaction.  Responsible for increasing major and principal philanthropic gifts for short and long-term support for Baystate Health through multi-year major and principal gift commitments and solicitations and donor base development. Build and maintain strong relationships with medical and nursing staff, clinical leaders, board members, and administrators to facilitate donor identification and engagement in BHF/donor activities.

2) Working with Foundation staff, he/she will be responsible for content for written materials and communications, as well as developing recognition policies for major gift donors.

3 )Serve as primary staff to the BHF Board’s Fundraising Committee and/or Campaign Cabinet, in partnership with the Executive Director of BHF.

4) Plan and direct all capital campaign activities for current and future campaigns based on the leadership direction provided by the Campaign Director and/or Executive Director of BHF. Provide leadership for and the facilitation of all campaign activities including material and media production, inventory control, coordination and collaboration with campaign counsel, the hiring of temporary campaign staff, prospect screening and research activities, solicitation training for staff and volunteers, tracking of solicitor and campaign progress, developing appropriate acknowledgment procedures, planning appropriate events, accompanying volunteers on solicitations and conducting individual solicitations on behalf of the campaign, presenting reports to the campaign steering committee and Foundation board as needed and planning donor recognition activities.

5) In cooperation with BHF leadership, plan and implement the major gifts portion of a comprehensive campaign.

6) Provide leadership and supervision to Philanthropy Officers and Prospect Researcher.

7) Serve as a senior member of the BHF team.

8) Experience with Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising software

Minimally Required Experience

Minimum 6 years fundraising experience, preferably in a hospital/medical center or college/university setting, and including significant major gift experience.

Skills/Competencies

Demonstrated success in the solicitation of major and principal gifts.

Demonstrated campaign experience

Demonstrated success working with high-level donors, volunteers, and administrators.

Ability to work in an independent and proactive manner.

Strong verbal and written communications skills.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Proficiency in fundraising software preferred

Supervisory experience preferred

Possess the personal qualities and flexibility necessary to thrive in a matrix leadership environment.
