Director of Alumni Engagement

 

The East Carolina Alumni Association is the constituency of former students whose continuing interest and support have helped ECU become known as one the finest comprehensive universities in the South.

The East Carolina Alumni Association was created to develop the spirit of cooperation and loyalty among alumni and to promote the general welfare of the institution. The scope of the association, which was organized by the classes of 1911 and 1912 in June, 1912, has grown tremendously as the alumni population has multiplied with a growing ECU. In order to keep pace with a rapidly developing university, the Alumni Association was incorporated as a 501© 3 nonprofit organization in 1967. Since that time the alumni population has increased from 15,000 to more than 140,000.

Job Duties
35%-
Provide supervision and management for the Alumni Engagement areas. The Director/Senior Director maintains responsibility for talent management to include hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of the Alumni Engagement staff. Responsible for the development, creation, and management of annual budgets, and reports.
Build and maintain strong professional relationships with major alumni affinity constituencies, and act as the primary liaison to – the ECU Women’s Roundtable (WRT), and the Black Alumni Chapter (BAC)

20%-Responsible for organizing and coordinating university-wide special events designed to promote both academic and non-academic activities within the University and are consistent with the strategic focus and image of East Carolina University, the ECU Alumni Association’s Affiliate Groups and Alumni Chapters. This includes special events with affinity chapters and campus partners to plan, execute and measure annual alumni reunions, including – but not limited to – the
annual Marching Pirates reunion, annual Black Alumni Chapter reunion, annual Distinguished Military Service society induction, and the annual Golden Alumni (50 year) reunion.

15%-Assist in future development of strategy and vision through integrated engagement and training with all areas of Alumni Relations including but not limited to: Annual Giving, Alumni Chapters; Communications and Campus/Unit Partnerships. Work closely with key campus constituencies including, but not limited to leaders in University Advancement, partnerships with– Career Services, Pirate Athletics, Student Affairs, and Uptown Greenville that realize both increased alumni engagement and additional revenue streams for the association – as well as others – to ensure active alumni association partnership on key programs and events that meet the mission of ECAA. Ensure open lines of communication between the ECAA and the Deans, Department Chairs and Major Gifts Officers on campus.

10%-Supports planning and execution of the events functions of board meetings, including but not limited to, reserving meeting space, securing catering for lunch and snacks as needed, ensuring adequate audio/visual, invitations to guest speakers as needed, and planning of board socials.

10%-Assist in the identification and engagement of prospects and in the development of the donor and volunteer pipeline by carrying a portfolio of engagement prospects. Provide prospects with opportunities for engagement and stewardship through volunteer committees, activities, and events.

5%-Serve as back-up to the Associate Vice President by training, coaching, and resolving employee relations issues. Plans and executes annual ECAA staff retreat, quarterly team-building activities and monthly team lunches. Performs related duties as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishment of the responsibilities and functions related to this position.

5%-Other Duties as Assigned

SUPERVISION:

Received: The Associate Vice Chancellor and President of the ECU Alumni Association will provide general supervision and specify goals and areas of special concentration. Progress will be evaluated periodically, in addition to annual review.

Exercised: The incumbent will be responsible for managing employees including recruitment and hiring; training; certifying time and attendance; performance management including performance appraisals, goal setting and performance action plans. Manages staff utilizing talent management best practices in alignment with the vision and values of the ECU Division of Advancement. Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement (Chapters/Student Engagement)

Minimum Education/Experience

REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with demonstrated ability to lead and motivate high-performing staff teams, the experience to build a successful alumni relations program, the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of constituencies, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills and the ability to identify and help secure mutually-beneficial partnerships.

The successful candidate will have at least a bachelor’s degree in communications, business, education or related field, a minimum of five progressive years’ experience in alumni relations, public relations, higher education administration, non-for-profit management, and/or event planning, and a demonstrated capability for interpersonal communications and team leadership. The ability and willingness to travel are necessary. A valid driver license and good driving record are essential.

  • Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail and a customer service-oriented attitude are essential for success in this position.
  • An appreciation for and support of diversity in the workplace in all its forms; proven success working with stakeholders; excellent strategic planning and project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills; and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others are required

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master’s degree
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in planning and coordinating events and reunion

strongly preferred.

  • A history of successful higher education program leadership in alumni relations,

development, or marketing/communications is strongly preferred.

  • A successful track record in a related profession – such as marketing, communications, non-

profit management, special events, student affairs, enrollment management – combined with a strong affinity for the East Carolina University and the Pirate Nation also will be given consideration.

  • The ability to work strategically, develop and implement constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and a team player.
  • Competency in problem solving.
