The Search

Newark Academy, a renowned independent private day school, seeks an exceptional and experienced chief advancement officer to provide strategic vision, leadership, and direction for all fundraising, engagement, and marketing and communications initiatives. This is a compelling opportunity for a sophisticated individual to lead a comprehensive advancement program during an exciting time of growth as the Academy recently celebrated the successful conclusion of its largest campaign to date and prepares to embark on its next fundraising endeavor in the coming years. The successful candidate will work collaboratively and creatively with colleagues across the Academy to support the primary goal of ensuring a superb educational experience for each and every student. This is a rare opportunity to partner with a visionary head of school and play a central role in leading the distinguished Academy to even greater prominence within the community and beyond.

One of the nation’s oldest private schools, Newark Academy has been shaping independent education for grades six through twelve in northern New Jersey for nearly 250 years. The institution’s rich history, outstanding faculty, high academic standards, and innovative curriculum sets the Newark Academy experience apart. The Middle School offers its own unique identity and signature curriculum designed specifically to meet the educational and development needs of students in grades six through eight, while in the Upper School, the curriculum grows more sophisticated as the Academy’s faculty engage and inspire students in a wide variety of courses. Newark Academy’s 68-acre suburban campus provides outstanding academic, arts, and athletic facilities, providing students with an array of curricular and extracurricular outlets. While students and faculty set ambitious standards for themselves and their peers, they thrive in a comfortable atmosphere of trust, respect, and collaboration.

In January 2019, Newark Academy celebrated the successful conclusion of the record-setting Rise and Flourish comprehensive capital campaign, which surpassed its original goal of $30 million by more than $11.5 million and marks the Academy’s most ambitious fundraising effort to date. The campaign supported numerous capital projects – including the creation of the Upper School Academic Center, a significant expansion of the Middle School, the renovation of the Rose Auditorium, and an upgrade of the Academy’s athletic facilities – along with critical endowment support. Building on the success of Rise and Flourish, and in celebration of the institution’s impending 250th anniversary, Newark Academy is in the planning stages of its next campaign endeavor, of which the chief advancement officer will serve as the architect and leader. Campaign priorities will include ongoing endowment growth and financial assistance, along with faculty support.

Reporting to the head of school and serving as a key member of the Administrative Leadership Team, the chief advancement officer provides innovative leadership and strategic vision to all aspects of the Academy’s fundraising activities and constituent relations. This individual will establish priorities, objectives, and best practices for a comprehensive advancement program across major, endowed, and planned giving; the annual fund; alumni and parent engagement; donor relations; and marketing and communications. The next chief advancement officer will continue to build a culture of high achievement, accountability, and professionalism to ensure that the Academy’s more than 5,000 alumni, current and former parents, trustees, and friends are actively engaged in the life of the institution. The ideal candidate must possess a track record of success in creating highly efficient and effective advancement programs and experience leading an advancement operation to new levels of growth.

With responsibility for a staff of nine, the chief advancement officer will bring a collegial, team-building style and a proven ability to motivate staff, keeping them inspired, energized, and focused on results. The chief advancement officer will also possess a depth of knowledge in all key areas of advancement, along with a demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and successfully close a comprehensive campaign. The candidate must also possess a deep appreciation for the mission, history, and values of Newark Academy, along with a leadership style that both fosters and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
