We are searching for someone who wants to provide significant help in regenerating the deteriorating global environment.

Job Summary: In close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Development Officer is responsible for the strategic planning, coordination, and implementing of all fundraising activities for the organization including cultivating financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, governments and other agencies, and through special events. Will maintain and build upon existing funding sources, and identify new ones. This is a new, half-time position for one-year with continuation or expansion dependent on success at meeting PINA funding goals. The job is carried out primarily remotely and on a flexible schedule, but may require some travel. Work in coordination with funding sources and PINA principals will occur across four US time zones. Compensation $32-36,000, depending on experience and negotiated time commitment.

Position: Development Officer • Reports to: Executive Director

PINA is a non-profit 501c6, continent-wide membership organization dedicated to promoting the value of permaculture design throughout society. We have a 501c3 association as well. 

What we do:  PINA supports permaculture educational standards, issues diplomas recognizing professional excellence, organizes a continental network of regional affiliates across North America and Hawaii, conducts research, sponsors conferences and online summits, carries out projects that embody permaculture ethics and which employ permaculture consultants to repair landscapes, heal communities, and cool the climate. Recent initiatives include: fire management research in western forests, and mobilizing and training skilled labor in support of farms transitioning to perennial agriculture.

Responsibilities include:  

  • Developing support and funding for PINA and its programs  
  • Working with the Development and Finance Committees of the Board in preparing and implementing fundraising and development plans 
  • Helping to identify and meet with major and potential supporters, donors, and funding organizations and their key people  
  • Preparing or overseeing the preparation and submission of grant applications
  • Attending the appropriate Board committee meetings including those of the Development and Outreach Committees  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, speaking, and communication skills in English, including computer competence and timely responsiveness; Spanish, especially, or French language a plus.
  • Demonstrated organizational, management, and planning skills;
  • Three years experience in professional development activities for non-profits and with the environmental advocacy community across the USA and Canada;
  • Experience working with boards of directors, committees, and volunteers;
  • Ability to work well with and supervise a variety of individuals: exhibits good diplomacy;
  • Importantly, the candidate should understand and embrace permaculture ethics of earth care, people care, and fair share/future care. 
  • Familiarity with permaculture design or completion of the Permaculture Design Course is a plus because it would help to visualize opportunities to increase PINA’s impact on the trajectory of North American societies.
