The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is
the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law
organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood
Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme
Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s
aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by
widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the
present, LDF’s mission has been transformative–to achieve racial
justice, equality, and an inclusive society.
LDF’s litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and public
education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice,
economic justice, education and political participation seek to
ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to
quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and
fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just
LDF’s Development Department is headquartered in New York City
and oversees all fundraising efforts to support LDF’s ongoing
programs and operations. This is a transformative time for LDF, and
the Development Department has grown as a result of the widespread
attention. The Development Department looks to build on this recent
growth in the coming years.
LDF seeks an experienced, passionate, and collaborative Manager
of Stewardship and Communications to oversee and implement the
communications and stewardship tools and processes that enable
strategic relationship engagement and management to ensure
fundraising success. The Manager of Stewardship and Communications
must possess exceptional writing and oral skills. This position
jointly reports to the Deputy Director of Development for
Individual Giving and the Deputy Director of Development for
This position has the option to be remote until Friday, December
31, 2021. Beginning Monday, January 3, 2022, any candidate selected
should be prepared to report to work in the office location
assigned to this position.
- Implement and manage the Development Department’s stewardship
program and calendar, assisting with the development of a
comprehensive donor recognition and stewardship program;
- Manage highly customized engagement plans for donors and
stewardship plans for different donor segments to enhance continued
and increased support;
- Manage the processes, procedures, and tools that enable and
encourage best practices and consistency in donor acknowledgement
- Prepare personalized correspondence including letters, donor
updates (emails), invitations, briefings, and other mailings for
the Deputy Directors and the Chief Development Officer; and
- Work cross-functionally with members of the Individual Giving
and Institutional Giving teams to ensure the quality of donor
interactions, including all potential touchpoints.
- Manage the creation of department-wide donor communications,
acknowledgement letters, and mass communications in coordination
with the Development divisions and the Communications
- Draft donor messaging, working cross-functionally to execute
effective targeted communications plans aligned with prioritized
donor segments and organizational strategies; and
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree;
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a development
- Commitment to the racial justice mission of LDF;
- Exceptional communication (written/verbal) and organizational
skills; ability to draft language quickly/under deadline;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Flexibility and ability to work independently and as a team
player with a range of constituents and colleagues; experience
working with senior executives and high-profile volunteer
leadership is a plus;
- Ability to multi-task and adhere to multiple deadlines;
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel,
PowerPoint and Word); and
- Experience with fundraising databases; familiarity with
Raiser’s Edge a plus.
