The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative–to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.

Development Department

LDF’s Development Department is headquartered in New York City and oversees all fundraising efforts to support LDF’s ongoing programs and operations. This is a transformative time for LDF, and the Development Department has grown as a result of the widespread attention. The Development Department looks to build on this recent growth in the coming years.

LDF seeks an experienced, passionate, and collaborative Manager of Stewardship and Communications to oversee and implement the communications and stewardship tools and processes that enable strategic relationship engagement and management to ensure fundraising success. The Manager of Stewardship and Communications must possess exceptional writing and oral skills. This position jointly reports to the Deputy Director of Development for Individual Giving and the Deputy Director of Development for Institutional Giving.

This position has the option to be remote until Friday, December 31, 2021. Beginning Monday, January 3, 2022, any candidate selected should be prepared to report to work in the office location assigned to this position.

Responsibilities include:

Stewardship:

  • Implement and manage the Development Department’s stewardship program and calendar, assisting with the development of a comprehensive donor recognition and stewardship program;
  • Manage highly customized engagement plans for donors and stewardship plans for different donor segments to enhance continued and increased support;
  • Manage the processes, procedures, and tools that enable and encourage best practices and consistency in donor acknowledgement and recognition;
  • Prepare personalized correspondence including letters, donor updates (emails), invitations, briefings, and other mailings for the Deputy Directors and the Chief Development Officer; and
  • Work cross-functionally with members of the Individual Giving and Institutional Giving teams to ensure the quality of donor interactions, including all potential touchpoints.

Development Communications:

  • Manage the creation of department-wide donor communications, acknowledgement letters, and mass communications in coordination with the Development divisions and the Communications Department;
  • Draft donor messaging, working cross-functionally to execute effective targeted communications plans aligned with prioritized donor segments and organizational strategies; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a development office;
  • Commitment to the racial justice mission of LDF;
  • Exceptional communication (written/verbal) and organizational skills; ability to draft language quickly/under deadline;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and as a team player with a range of constituents and colleagues; experience working with senior executives and high-profile volunteer leadership is a plus;
  • Ability to multi-task and adhere to multiple deadlines;
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint and Word); and
  • Experience with fundraising databases; familiarity with Raiser’s Edge a plus.

This is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, skills, efforts or requirements or working conditions associated with the job. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job or to require that other or different tasks be performed as assigned. This description does not constitute a contract of employment and LDF may exercise its employment-at-will rights at any time.

Please note that LDF requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Accordingly, successful candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit proof of vaccination prior to the commencement of employment, unless they qualify for a reasonable accommodation for bona fide medical or religious reasons.
