Job Description

The Assistant Dean of Advancement (Assistant Dean) is responsible for planning and implementing an integrated approach to the advancement program in the College of Science by overseeing alumni relations, communications, and development programs to maximize the support and exposure of the College. The Assistant Dean serves as chief development officer and manager of the college's advancement program, with responsibility for securing private philanthropic support and producing targeted alumni and constituent engagement opportunities as well as strategic communications highlighting the college's priorities. The Assistant Dean will be a central figure in taking the College of Science to the next level of achievement and impact by coalescing strategic priorities with a robust advancement program. A highly favorable context exists for this endeavor, as well as for the continued, significant growth of the college's brand and fundraising revenues. Specific areas of focus and enhancement under the Assistant Dean's leadership include the following: more consistent engagement and leveraging of academic and research program leadership in advancement activities; prioritizing management and engagement of the College of Science Roundtable, which includes several major and principal gift donors, and helping to facilitate their close partnership with Interim Dean Fricker; strategically engaging young alumni in order to build a more robust pipeline of support to the college; and identifying and promulgating themes of innovation, science, and research across the broader college and university community on an ongoing basis. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will lead all campaign related activities for the college, including the college's participation in Virginia Tech's Boundless Impact Campaign, and will be a central figure in all related college planning and strategy.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and experience or Master's degree. | Significant experience in progressively responsible development leadership positions, which includes work in the following functional areas (individual giving, institutional giving, planned giving, stewardship, alumni relations, board relations) and participation in a major capital campaign (planning, implementation, management, and successful conclusion), for an institution of higher education, nonprofit organization, or other environment of similar complexity with multiple stakeholders is highly desirable. | Demonstrated ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and direction with at least five years of significant supervisory experience, including experience creating and managing a budget. A strong record of recruiting and developing exceptional people and fostering a transparent work environment where collegiality is a key to success. | Particular strength in developing the case for support and strategic and complex fundraising plans, and executing against those plans to achieve goals and objectives. Experience working directly with the most senior levels of an organization is very important, as is the ability to effectively strategize and engage various groups and constituents. Demonstrated ability to translate concepts into multi-stakeholder initiatives. | Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to shape messaging in order to move individuals and institutions across the spectrum of prospect development, culminating in solicitations appropriate to organizational priorities and donors' interests. Hands on experience with six and seven figure gifts and greater, including cultivation through solicitation and stewardship, as well as experience working with alumni and annual fund strategies for grooming the next generation of annual leadership and major gift donors. Success in securing gifts from both defined and undefined constituencies. | Demonstrated ability in planning and executing strategic communications to complement advancement initiatives and achieve goals. Ability to understand and distill complex academic and scientific topics and projects for external audiences. Experience identifying and coaching project spokespeople. A functional understanding of how to effectively leverage various communication mediums and distribution channels for optimal exposure and impact. | Experience identifying, nurturing, and motivating volunteers, and an appreciation for their role in building an effective fundraising network. | Skill at goal setting and measuring success, and agility in addressing alternate program directions to meet goals when necessary. Experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic plans. | The ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy and process. A working knowledge of modern data management practices and techniques, including database information systems, data modeling, and analysis. Familiarity with technology and other innovations that can streamline the development process and contribute to the integration of advancement functions. | Ability and willingness to travel domestically.


Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree and strong academic credentials that will be credible to donors and alumni are preferred.| Previous work experience in higher education, in a school of science, and/or in a hybrid centralized decentralized fundraising model involving multiple units is preferred.
