Office of Development

The Office of Development is principally responsible for securing the understanding and philanthropic support of the private sector for the Institute and its programs. The Office focuses its efforts on obtaining commitments for major and principal gifts to the Institute and its associated foundation(s) and leads the comprehensive fundraising efforts, which results in gift revenues in excess of $100 million annually and nearly $200 million in new gifts and commitments during Fiscal Year 2020. Support is sought to enable the Institute and its colleges, schools, and other programs to achieve strategic objectives that will keep our educational programs on the leading edge of discoveries and developments.

College of Sciences

The College of Sciences consists of the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology, and it is central to Georgia Tech's future. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in these disciplines and collaborates with other Georgia Tech colleges on graduate degrees in Bioinformatics, Quantitative and Computational Finance, and Human and Computer Interaction, collaborating closely with the College of Engineering and College of Computing, both among the nation's Top 10 ranked programs, as well as the Scheller College of Business, ranked among the nation's Top 10 public business schools. With 220 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 57 teaching faculty, 187 research faculty, and 127 support staff, the College serves all of Georgia Tech's undergraduate students, while also maintaining enrollment of students seeking degrees in its sciences disciplines, including 1,890 undergraduates and 834 graduate students at both the master's and Ph.D. levels. Faculty and graduate students are executing on $70 million in research initiatives this year. Having long recognized that interdisciplinary research is a key component of the continual growth of the College, sciences faculty and students are leading and engaging in a number of interdisciplinary activities with computing, engineering, liberal arts, business, design, and the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Job Summary:

Front-line development officer responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of a coordinated program of fundraising activities, leveraging the counsel and support of a seasoned development director serving as team leader and supervisor. Uses professional relationship building skills to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospective donors capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more. Support special events to involve and cultivate major gift donors and prospects. Identifies stewardship opportunities for major gift donors. Collaborates with deans, school chairs, and faculty, and coordinates with other development and alumni relations staff. This role provides an opportunity to broaden knowledge of fundraising approaches. This position is expected to contribute to team results while building long term, meaningful donor relationships. Typically solicits gifts in the range of $25,000 to $250,000 and is accountable for raising up to $750,000 per year. Manages a prospect pool of up to 200 prospects.

 Will interact on a regular basis with: Alumni, Parents, Corporate and Foundation Representatives, Staff, and Volunteers.

 Typically, will advise and counsel: Unit Leadership, Deans, Development Officers, and Faculty.

 Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design and/or implementation of comprehensive fundraising plans for assigned college, school, program, region, or constituency.
  •  Use professional relationship building skills to develop and implement plans and strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift donors and prospective donors. Close major gifts and commitments, both personally and in coordination with supervisor, with a typical gift range of $25,000 to $250,000, and an average annual fundraising accountability up to $750,000.
  •  Establish and maintain a high degree of collaboration with other development officers and staff, as well as deans, school chairs, faculty, and other Institute academic and executive officers.
  •  Submit timely contact reports, prospect plans, and solicitations into tracking system.
  •  Participate in the preparation of written development materials including case statements, proposals, impact reports, and fundraising initiative/campaign related literature for assigned college, school, and/or program(s).
  •  Support special events and/or staff advisory board meetings to involve and cultivate major gift donors and prospective donors.
  •  Perform other related duties as assigned.

  Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Two to four years of job-related experience in fundraising, and/or relevant experience in sales, marketing, or other related fields.

 Preferred Qualifications

Fundraising skills gained within a research university environment are preferred

 Two plus years of proven development experience and results in soliciting and closing annual gifts and/or major gifts, and/or experience in a Development Services role in a higher education setting and a campaign environment.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Use of office related computer applications is required. Travel is an essential part of the position as is participation in evening and weekend activities. Focus primarily on securing major gifts and grants from alumni, other individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  •  Knowledge of fundraising approaches and the strong interpersonal skills, ethical standards, and good judgement.
  •  Excellent skills in building long-term relationships, and persuasive written and verbal communication skills. Requires skills in prioritizing, negotiating, strategic planning, project management, program administration and organization.
