The Senior Manager, Major Giving is responsible for all philanthropy efforts from major donors, such as individual donors and family foundations. 

Primary Job Functions:

  • Responsible for developing and implementing an ambitious fundraising plan for principal, major and planned giving from individual givers and family foundations;
  • Developing, overseeing and implementing strategies and goals for fundraising from major donors and other prospects;
  • Manages a team of Development Officers to ambitious SMARTIE (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timescale, Inclusive, Equitable) objectives in line with the principal and major giving plan; providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
  • Plan, lead, and direct all development officers to achieve goals and objectives utilizing as appropriate, principal, major, planned, and blended gifts;
  • Develop, implement, and oversee systems for team’s process documentation, progress tracking/moves management, and metrics;
  • Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews;
  • Supervise and/or conduct ongoing research to identify new opportunities for support from individual donors and family foundations;
  • Supervise and/or developing a steady stream of tailored, personalized communications and interactions (face-to-face, virtual, email, mail, phone, events, etc.);
  • Supervising the development and implementation of a philanthropic plan for each significant principal donor;
  • Liaising with program and evaluation departments to digest and present programmatic work in a compelling fashion, finding appropriate matches between SPLC’s impact goals and funders’ priorities;
  • Responsible for reaching annual revenue goals and monitoring performance on both income and expenditure as a budget holder;
  • Participate, as required, in fundraising team efforts including internal planning efforts;
  • Collaborate with SPLC programmatic teams to ensure that any opportunities for non-funding partnerships are passed to the appropriate staff; and
  • Manage a portfolio of 10-15 donors.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Seven years of development experience in non-profit organization preferred;
  • Demonstrated management experience of major, midlevel, or planned giving officers;
  • Experience growing a major, midlevel, or planned giving program;
  • Record of achievement that demonstrates fund-raising skill and experience, including a proven track record of soliciting and closing six plus figure gifts; 
  • Experience in preparing budgets and financial reports; and
  • High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • A proven ability to manage a team to achieve stretch goals, using one-on-ones, feedback and objectives;
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication and editing skills;
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated;
  • Energy, initiative, intellect, flexibility and talent as a team player;
  • Ability to balance big-picture thinking with attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of current and evolving trends in principle, major and planned giving fundraising,
  • Demonstrated leadership ability working with cross-departmental teams;
  • Demonstrated skill to work within a multi-faceted environment with strong capabilities in planning, organizing, and managing;
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with proven ability to manage multiple competing tasks and demands; prioritizing several projects at once;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with colleagues, leadership, and funders;
  • The ability to work independently and/or with a team;
  • Positive attitude and tenacity when faced with obstacles;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion;
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning; and
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SPLC.

This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
