Summary: 

The Development Officer, Regional – Northern California serves as the relationship manager for a portfolio of high-potential major gift donors and prospects in and around Northern California, meeting both short- and long-term fundraising objectives. Expected to successfully identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospects for annual and principal gifts. Must be able to enthusiastically and accurately represent Southern Poverty Law Center to a variety of constituents.

The Development Officer, Regional – Northern California functions as part of a multidisciplinary team that develops innovative approaches to identifying prospects, crafting gift opportunities, and engaging donors. Participates as key member of the major gifts and development teams in the creation of overall goals and strategies.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Engage and deepen relationship with major giving donors, creating a strong connection between the funder’s interests and SPLC’s mission;
  • Stay up to date on SPLCs programmatic work and educate funders on giving opportunities;
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 – 150 donors;
  • Develop and successfully implement ambitious individualized solicitation plans for entire portfolio;
  • Consistently initiates quality communications (visits, calls, solicitations) with potential and current major donors, achieving cultivation, solicitation and stewardship metrics;
  • Directly solicit prospects and donors, focusing on gifts of $25,000 or more;
  • Responsible for identifying prospective major giving donors and developing and successfully implementing individualized major, planned, and principal giving strategies with a focus on closing $25,000+ commitments;
  • Achieve short and long-term financial goals;
  • Gives organizational briefings in person and online to donors and groups, including but not limited to workplace giving, organizations, and community groups;
  • Works with the midlevel and planned giving teams to qualify new prospects for assignment to the major giving portfolio;
  • Coordinates and implements regional events and strategies;
  • Develops cultivation and solicitation materials, including briefing memos, proposals, and stewardship materials;
  • Develop and implement engagement opportunities for portfolio that deepen the donor relationship to SPLC, reporting on results;
  • Maintains accurate and timely record of moves and actions in database;
  • Travel required (when traveling restrictions are lifted);
  • Create portfolio and performance reports as requested by management; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Five (5) years of professional fundraising experience;
  • Proven record of five figure solicitation and fulfillment, exceptional communication skills in communications, and results-driven relationship building;
  • Successful track record of building long-term sustainable relationships; and
  • High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Passionate advocate for racial justice and anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
  • Understanding of non-profit fundamentals, including fundraising practices, concepts and techniques;
  • Ability to analyze portfolio donor’s or prospect’s financial capacity, charitable and economic interests, level of interest in and linkage to SPLC and draw conclusions from a major donor fundraising perspective;
  • Ability to work remotely and navigate in major cities and to work evenings and weekends as necessary;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ease and skill in cultivating relationships with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and circumstances;
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to persuade in speech and in writing;
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with proven ability to manage multiple competing tasks and demands; prioritizing several projects at once;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with colleagues, leadership, and funders;
  • Ability to establish goals, objectives, timelines and meet deadlines under pressure;
  • The ability to work independently and/or with a team;
  • Positive attitude and tenacity when faced with obstacles;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion;
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning; and
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SPLC.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
