The Senior Writer must possess impeccable writing and editing skills and an ability to accomplish marketing and communications goals through their craft. The position is responsible for supporting and leading writing for all Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) communications and marketing initiatives including news, features, marketing, and social media writing.


Leadership Exercised:

  • Generates compelling story ideas from the collective work of CCUSA and its member agencies
  • Conveys a clear and consistent brand voice for CCUSA through writing
  • Provides copy editing services while simultaneously developing the writing skills of CCUSA staff
  • Adds to a healthy and productive team dynamic


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Writes clear, concise, and grammatically correct copy
  • Creates original concepts that result in effective and compelling communications
  • Writes publications, annual reports, press releases, news articles, and feature stories
  • Writes headlines and body copy for marketing and advertising materials, including fundraising appeals
  • Is comfortable writing for a variety of channels including social media, email, website, print, etc.
  • Contributes to editorial conversations for the CCUSA digital magazine, exploring ways CCUSA can assemble stories, initiatives, and thought leaders to better understand the complexities of various social services needs facing America
  • Demonstrates a commanding knowledge of the Catholic faith, particularly its social doctrine
  • Conducts thorough interviews and research and writes scripts and talking points that lead to accurate and factual storytelling
  • Supports the writing and editing needs of various CCUSA teams, including Member Services, Social Policy and Government Affairs, Disaster Relief, and other critical service areas
  • Vets potential vendors and partner organizations for conflicts of interest
  • Contributes to a culture of innovation


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent writing, oral communications and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including setting priorities and adapting to changes in a time-sensitive, deliverable-driven workplace
  • Experience managing and/or writing for social media channels
  • Experience writing for and/or planning a periodical
  • Familiarity with commonly used style guides
  • Professional demeanor and a dedicated work ethic
  • Self-motivated and organized approach
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of Catholic faith and social doctrine


Education & Experience:   

  • BS/BA (or equivalent experience) in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field
  • Understanding of the Catholic faith/social doctrine (required); MA (or equivalent) in Catholic theology (preferred)
  • Experience working for a Catholic organization (preferred)
  • Five to ten years of professional experience with a demonstrated excellence in writing


Work Environment:

  • This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight
  • This position may require some minimal travel for storytelling purposes
