The Director of Digital Communications will be responsible for managing strategy conception and implementation for all Freedom House digital properties, including the website, all social media platforms, and other publications. The Director of Digital Communications will help create and maximize the impact of our online strategies and content across a variety of platforms, and also assist with technology management and publications creation and management for key department deliverables. The Director will also provide counsel on how to increase the impact of the social platforms for Freedom House leadership. Ultimately, focusing on how the digital strategy and assets build the organizational brand and recognition of Freedom House.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

♦          Minimum ten years online editorial experience, ideally in communications, marketing, journalism or social media, with undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university    

♦          Led or been a part of creating or disseminating digital and web strategy from the start or helped to adapt and grow a presence for a growing organization.

♦          Experience building a leader’s online thought leadership presenceStrong editorial and writing skills; ability to write strong, clickable headlines

♦          Exceptional time management skills, ability to work to tight deadlines and to manage multiple projects concurrently

♦          Website management experience

♦          Adept at project management, experience managing technology budgets a plus

♦          Knowledge of SEO and mobile best practices

♦          Familiarity with website content management systems (Drupal preferred) and knowledge of basic HTML

♦          Appreciation for design and aptitude for user experience

♦          Good attention to editorial detail

♦          Interest in human rights issues strongly preferred

♦          Experience managing staff and interns

♦          Strong sense of discretion and ability to handle confidential issues

SOME DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

♦          Responsible for overseeing both big picture and day-to-day implementation of the Freedom House website strategy     , web project development, and regular site maintenance

♦          Responsible for overseeing analytics reporting, and social media engagement for Freedomhouse.org and all related digital properties. Lead the content strategy for the website in coordination with Vice President of Communications and other key internal stakeholders.

♦          Provide final approvals to a Graphics Communications Specialist to produce daily social media and multimedia content promoting Freedom House research, advocacy and programs, and ensure cohesive Freedom House branding across print and digital publications.     

♦          Lead selection and management of all technology vendors and website development vendors needed to maintain the day-to-day security, stability and functionality of the FreedomHouse.org website.

♦          Write and manage Request for Proposal documents (RFPs), contracts, project budgets, and manage day-to-day project communications with vendors (including managing website server, and consulting with security experts in order to maintain site accessibility).

♦          Analyze web analytics, social media      metrics, and Google webmaster tools data to leverage strategic insights to ultimately improve digital communications practices and search engine optimization efforts (SEO). Provide monthly and quarterly reporting on web analytics and social media metrics to inform Communications strategies.

♦          Partner with Communications, Advocacy and Research staff to develop promotional and content marketing strategies for all Freedom House publications, including annual reports, newsletters special reports, blog posts, and other content as assigned

♦          Work with the development team to manage the Salesforce database, Pardot, Salesforce CRM and email outreach software, and Eventbrite account   

♦          Edit copy for list emails, email marketing newsletters, infographics, social media content, and web landing pages, and draft this content as needed.

♦          Supervise the Graphics Communications Specialist who manages creation of print products.

♦          With Graphics Communications Specialist, conduct staff digital media trainings to empower interns, analysts and regional program teams to deploy social campaigns that fulfill grant activities and advocacy goals.

♦          Oversee creation, editing and posting of both paid and organic content for freedomhouse.org and social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube

♦               Supervise curation of content to produce compelling, cohesive, thematic landing pages

♦               Lead outreach and influencer engagement strategy to nurture connections with influential Twitter users as a larger part of a Communications and Advocacy Audience Strategy

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General Working Conditions:

♦          General working office environment

♦          Some overtime hours including evenings and weekends to complete tasks or attend events

♦          Travel to event sites and field offices less than 20% of the time

♦          Exposed to outside weather conditions when required to attend event venues or travel

Physical Requirements:                     

♦          Sedentary, regularly required to sit for extended periods of time; constantly talk, hear and understand speech at normal levels using a telephone. Occasionally required to stand, walk, and bend over, reach overhead, use hands, wrists and fingers, to grasp, push, pull, move, handle, feel, and type. Constantly required to use close vision and distance vision for regular computer work. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. to waist height.
