Position Available
Truman is seeking a Director of Development (DoD). Reporting to the President and CEO, the DoD will be responsible for implementing a strategic development plan to substantially increase major and multiyear gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The DoD would dedicate 75% of their time in pursuing funding for the Truman Center, and the remainder in support of the Truman Project.
Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to other duties that may be assigned in the future, the DoD will have the following responsibilities:
Major and Planned Gifts (35%):

Working closely with the President
and CEO, developing, implementing, and managing on an ongoing basis
a proactive and effective major gifts program. Tracking and
building the institution’s pipeline to identify, cultivate,
solicit, and steward individual major gift prospects;
Personally manage a portfolio of 100+
major gifts prospects. Independently take approximately 20 meetings
per month, and convert 15 gifts annually at the $25,000 or more
range.;
Maintaining appropriate donor
tracking and activity in Salesforce to ensure that cultivation and
solicitation strategies are successfully implemented and goals are
met;
Implement and grow the newly
established Board of Advisors program to assist with
diversifying pool utilizing effective donor identification
and acquisition techniques;
Participating in weekly syncs on
department activity, meeting preparations, and pipeline
review with the President and CEO and other Executive team
members;
Developing a strategy and
implementation program to expand significantly the prospect pool
utilizing effective donor identification and acquisition
techniques.
Corporate and Foundation Relations (35%):

Designing, implementing and managing
a program to identify, cultivate and solicit corporate and
foundation relationships at both a local and national level,
including the corporate membership program, Truman Corporate
Council;
Identifying emerging business leaders
and industry trends with an emphasis on developing long-term
high-value corporate alliances and philanthropic support;
Identifying and communicating
internally prospects for foundation support and trends in
foundation giving that are in alignment with Truman’s mission and
programs;
In partnership with the Executive and
Programs team, grow the relationship with the current prospect pool
of foundations and corporations (currently approximately 40
entities). Conversion of 10 annually.
Coordinate with internal
stakeholders to develop marketing materials, and articulate a
compelling case for support;
Managing the solicitation, grant
writing and stewardship process for corporations and
foundations;
Represent Truman Center/Project at
on-site and off-site events with donors, prospective donors,
corporate, and foundation representatives.
General (30%):
-
Process and implement standard
development operations, including data management, acknowledgments,
process/analyze financial and board reporting;
Coordinating and communicating with
the Managing Director of Finance and Administration on cash
receipts and strategic thinking around fundraising budgets;
Communicating with Truman HQ staff
(and Truman membership) the fundamentals of fundraising and acting
as a resource;
Coordinating with the Director of
Communications on relevant press releases and emails that impact
funders and prospects;
Helping assure quality and timeliness
for deliverables for funders from Truman HQ staff;
Supporting events and other programs
and activities of the Board, President and CEO and senior staff
relating to the mission and activities of Truman;
Supporting the Board, President and
CEO and senior staff in the ongoing implementation of Truman’s
strategic plan;
Regularly attending and participating
in regular board and “all-staff” meetings;
Assuming responsibility for reaching
assigned fundraising and activity goals (during specific campaign
periods both the dollar amount and number of gifts will be adjusted
to obtain the fundraising goal established by the Board);
Participating in the preparation of
and attending TruCon, held annually.
Qualifications
-
Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated
success in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major
individual, corporate and foundation gifts in a significant
non-profit organization;
Demonstrated leadership ability to
create and nurture long-term relationships with donors and
prospects and to develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation
strategies for each individual;
Demonstrated experience in project
scoping and grant writing;
Ability to articulate the case for
support and to interact with Board members, donors and prospects at
the highest level;
Demonstrated skill and initiative in
tough situations; demonstrated skill at spotting and seizing
opportunities quickly and with effective communication;
Ability and willingness to
travel;
Must be able to work occasional
flexible hours to support events and programs;
Bachelor’s degree; relevant
experience may be substituted for a degree.
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time exempt position, offering $90,000 - $110,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience, and excellent benefits, including 3 weeks of vacation accrued during the first year, health/dental benefits, and a 401K 3% employer contribution.
