OBJECTIVE:
The experienced, creative Director of Major Gifts executes and manages cultivation and stewardship strategies in support of fundraising campaigns, gift planning and major gift procurement, donor relations, and annual giving. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Development (VPD) and working closely with other senior staff, the Director of Major Gifts is an integral part of a professional team with a mission to increase effective engagement with the philanthropic community.

In this role, the Director will oversee the major giving program and a team of front-line fundraising staff in coordination with the development team. Through directly working with donors and through supervising others, this person will manage the stewardship of Common Cause’s donors and identify and pursue new donors and funding opportunities. The Director will also manage their own portfolio, soliciting major gifts ($50,000-$1,000,000+) and event sponsorships. Finally, the Director will work closely with senior leadership, including the President, to help them manage and steward their own portfolios of donors, and will complete creative assignments as they arise. The Director will help bolster Common Cause’s mission to defend our voting rights, to end partisan gerrymandering, to restore ethics and accountability to all levels of government, and to pursue many other critical democracy reforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Management (40%)

  • Directs, manages, develops and mentors frontline gift officers (Senior Philanthropic Advisors) and any operational and administrative services of the Major Gifts team;
  • Provides management support to the VPD as necessary to develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure the effective functioning of the Major Gifts
  • Commits to promoting and supporting an environment of equity and diversity;
  • Conducts portfolio analysis across the team to ensure discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship goals are met.

Strategic and Administrative (30%)

  • Working with the VPD, establishes annual and monthly revenue major gift and legacy goals and provides reporting to VPD on major gift program;
  • Alongside gift officers, designs and executes major donor fundraising campaigns, with the goal of increasing engagement and annual support;
  • Supports senior leadership in the preparation of prospect communications, research collateral, and funding;
  • Constructs, oversees and executes vision for Major Giving program alongside the VPD;
  • Mentors and provides major gift training for staff outside of the development department.

Donor Relations with Individual Donors, Family Foundations & Donor Advised Funds (30%)

  • Designs and executes annual plans to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors that will meet or exceed donor engagement and revenue;
  • Manages a portfolio of prospects and current donors with the capacity to contribute significant support toward the priorities of Common Cause.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have:

  • Minimum 7-10 years of demonstrated years in development, major gifts fundraising and constituent engagement responsibility;
  • The ambition to confidently ask for monetary and in-kind contributions;
  • A profound understanding of moves management strategy and the capability to design and execute donor-centric engagement activities;
  • The professional and emotional intelligence to work with high-level organization leaders, staff, board members, and volunteers;
  • Proficiency in research and relevant analysis, including navigation of databases and online resources;
  • Flexibility to travel frequently, work evenings, and weekends;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Commitment to authentic diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Highly preferred:

  • Strong working knowledge of the broad philanthropic landscape, prospect research methodology, best practices, and evolving trends in philanthropy;
  • Experience in frontline fundraising and supervision a plus, but relevant other experiences valued;
  • Experience managing a multi-state portfolio;
  • Higher education and/or advanced certification.

Other preferred skills/abilities:

  • Familiarity with 501 (c)3 and 501 (c)4 non-profit organizations and the legal distinctions between both entities;
  • Experience developing fundraising communications for democracy related initiatives and programs;
  • The ability to navigate CRMs and research tools/databases;
  • Experience initiating and executing all phases of a capital campaign.

SALARY: $90,000 – $105,000 annually. Work will be performed in Washington, D.C. office and virtual environments.
