As Penn State looks forward to the conclusion of its historically successful fundraising campaign, A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence, a Director of Development, Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center is needed to support the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR) at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine.

This position requires an energetic, goal-oriented, results-driven, hands-on leader with proven experience in cultivating, securing, and stewarding major gifts. This leader must be able to develop and implement a fundraising plan that includes annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, and corporation and foundation support. As a community-based fundraising professional, the Director of Development (DoD) will plan and implement all facets of development work at the hospital, including but not limited to, events-based fundraising and the solicitation of both leadership annual and major gifts. They will work in concert with the Penn State Health and College of Medicine Director of Annual Giving to develop and implement direct mail appeals and digital fundraising efforts and the Director of Donor Relations on developing and implementing a stewardship plan for their donors and volunteers. The DoD will also be expected to act as a community ambassador, participating in local events where the hospital requires a presence.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Health System Development, and working closely with the Regional President, Penn State Health Lancaster and St. Joseph's Medical Centers, this role will:
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategies and programs to engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership and highest-level prospects.
  • Articulate Penn State Health and Penn State University's needs, ambitions, and values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, through excellent informal and formal communications.
  • Plan short- and long-term fundraising goals in collaboration with the ED of Health Systems Development.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of major and leadership gift and corporate and foundation prospects, meeting gift officer metrics such as number of solicitations, dollars raised, number of visits, number of assessment visits, etc.
  • Initiate, create, and finalize proposals and correspondence for leadership and major gift as well as corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team of Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center.
  • Engage Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center leadership, physicians, and care team in the fundraising enterprise, advising on strategy for all complex gift arrangements benefitting the hospital.
  • Work with Penn State Health and College of Medicine DDAR team to develop, implement, and manage events, stewardship strategy, and relationship-building for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for donors and prospects.
  • Recruit and guide diversely representative volunteer committees charged with meaningful roles and responsibilities in the fundraising and events-based fundraising process.
  • Participate in presentations to University and to business, social, and civic groups.
  • Propose and, once approved, work with the Executive Director, Health System Development to manage the development budget for the medical center.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of the use of protected health information in fundraising and provide guidance in this area to clinical staff at the hospital when engaging patient donors.

    This position typically requires 4+ years related experience, Bachelor's Degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will also:

  • Establish and implement strategy for fundraising programs.
  • Assure acknowledgment of gifts and timely reporting of their use; ensure proper publicity for donors.
  • Manage and supervise assigned staff (if applicable) and coordinate routine activities to ensure successful completion of their tasks.
  • If applicable, evaluate staff performance and make recommendations for professional development opportunities.
  • Have exemplary interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to self-motivate and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain a commitment to professional development, learning, and being mentored.

    Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position's duties and a valid driver's license are required. Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required, as well as the following: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
