Reports to: Director of Development, San Francisco Bay Area 

Status: Full Time; Exempt; Full Time

Location: San Francisco Bay Area preferred (currently remote, estimated through January 2022) 

Start date: Immediate 

 

The Leadership Gifts Officer for California will work to strategically strengthen the statewide development effort to meet and exceed our ambitious annual fundraising goals, currently set at $3 million for FY22. This person will partner with regional Development leadership and staff, the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area Executive Directors, regional Advisory Board members, and other staff to initiate, plan, and manage fundraising efforts including donor research and cultivation, gift solicitation, stewardship, Advisory Board activities, fundraising events and partnership management with the Corporate and Foundations teams. 

The Leadership Gifts Officer is responsible for a portfolio of institutional funders and individual donors with capacity to give gifts at $10,000 and above. In addition, this position will work to advance Facing History’s visibility and profile in California.

Who We Are 

Facing History in California currently operates out of two geographic centers, Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area. This role will be critical in developing greater attention to statewide service for the state. There are currently small program teams in both regions, working together to reach and support educators across the state. The California teams are part of a matrixed organization headquartered in Boston.

You Will: 

  • Serve as primary manager for a portfolio of current and potential donors who give up at the $10K level and above, including individuals, corporations and foundations, with a focus on family foundations and donor advised funds.

  • Participate as part of a local and national/international team to carry out the organization’s fundraising strategy in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles regions and on behalf of the work across the organization; collaborate to build fundraising plans and fulfill targets on annual revenue goals for California.

  • Engage targeted constituencies through development and management of programs and activities that deepen donor engagement and revenue growth, including salon dinners and other events, with particular attention to the challenges and opportunities of digital engagement and re-entry to in-person events.

  • In close partnership with the Executive Directors and the Directors of Development for LA and SFBA, work with the CA Advisory Boards communicating Facing History’s financial model, building board development strategies, providing stewardship and support to Board members, identifying and cultivating new members, and overseeing sub-committee activities.

  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships to establish revenue goals for corporate support; develop, cultivate and solicit a robust pipeline of local, aligned corporate prospects.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to travel within California once in-person work resumes.

  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated work experience in donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation experience required. Must be able to demonstrate past successes as a major gift fundraiser

  • Knowledge and experience in key fundraising areas, including direct solicitation, institutional giving, cultivation and stewardship 

  • Demonstrable commitment to a philanthropic mindset that centers diversity, equity and inclusion to fundraising 

  • Engaging relationship-builder with excellent interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills; experience building relationships with Board members preferred

  • Familiarity with the California philanthropic and educational landscape

  • Creative and flexible self-starter able to work both individually and as a member of consensus-seeking teams 

  • Organized and effective project manager with the ability to manage multiple needs and assignments in a fast-paced nonprofit setting 

  • Genuine commitment to the mission of Facing History and Ourselves and ability to articulate the importance of the organization’s work to a variety of audiences 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google office suite; experience with Salesforce or other fundraising databases required

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience
