The Executive Director leads internal communications activities across the division and serves as a key partner in all CU Boulder Advancement fundraising, engagement, and outreach efforts. The Executive Director works closely with CU Boulder Strategic Relations and Communications (SRC) to ensure that the Advancement communications strategy is aligned with the campus, as well as colleges, schools, units, and programs, consistently following branding and identity guidelines, design specifications, tone, and voice standards. The Executive Director may serve on the Advancement and SRC leadership teams.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Leadership and Strategy: 

  • Leads and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy with measurable and prioritized elements to advance the division’s fundraising, engagement, outreach, and talent management goals.
  • Achieves defined objectives by establishing annual plans and priorities for the division.
  • Provides university-level leadership, expertise, counsel and coordination for communication and marketing strategies, as well as leads the team that produces hundreds of results vital to the overall success of Advancement efforts.
  • Analyzes and expands prospective and current constituency groups by identifying needs and creating targeted strategies that enhance and sustain relationships with CU Boulder.
  • Provides vision and strategies for Advancement social media and web communications, including advising and assisting colleagues throughout the division and developing a comprehensive strategy for all Advancement digital communication assets.
  • Through collaborative partnerships with administrative and academic leadership, advances the core products and message of various fundraising and engagement campaigns.
  • Uses data, research and technology trends to inform thoughtful segmentations, create feedback loops, evaluate the effectiveness of activities and make tactical adjustments.
  • Actively seeks out and appropriately applies trends from peer and aspirant institutions.
  • Serves as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based Advancement functions and campus colleagues to foster strategic, effective and collaborative fundraising and engagement practices.

Management:

  • Manages, evaluates, coaches and mentors a team of 10-15 professional marketing, writing and creative staff who provide strategic guidance, hands-on production-level work and in-house liaison/consultant services for Advancement and campus partners.
  • Contracts and manages external vendors such as freelance writers, consultants, photographers, designers, etc., directly and in partnership with offices across Advancement, and including a review of existing and potential technology tools.
  • Manages department budget in alignment with strategic plan and annual work plans.
  • Establishes operating policies, procedures, departmental and individual goals, and metrics.
  • Leads with solid approaches to project management, quality assurance and quality control, while also having the skills and abilities to instill calm and a sense of purpose in the team.
  • Balances disciplined planning with agility and handling the unexpected.

Creative Content Development and Content Management:

  • Provides leadership and strategic oversight of marketing elements related to fundraising and engagement priorities, including white papers, case statements, newsletters, e-communications, stewardship materials, principal gift proposals, brochures, presentation materials, campaign content and Advancement web-based content.
  • Leads and implements internal communications strategy for approximately 150-person Advancement division.
  • Articulates messages on behalf of the University through quality writing, strong and intentional branding across all channels, and thoughtful storytelling.
  • Develops effective Advancement communications that highlight meaningful engagement opportunities for internal and external constituencies to increase support for CU Boulder’s priorities and initiatives.
  • Elevates CU Boulder’s world-class research and educational initiatives to a wide variety of constituents in compelling and exciting ways.
  • Ensures editorial consistency, quality and impact across all Advancement marketing and communication efforts, including executive communications, print, digital, visual and special initiatives.
  • Supervises the production of the award-winning Coloradan alumni magazine, including website content management, photography, video and multimedia efforts.
  • In partnership with the SRC executive communications team and other campus communicators, develops content to support special projects and events, including Chancellor and leadership remarks, invitation and program content, social media coverage, and media relations.
  • In partnership with SRC, provides strategic direction and supports content creation for gift announcements and other Advancement-related stories.
  • Collaborates and leads partnership with outside marketing consultants around the messaging and communications planning related to campaigns or projects.

We currently offer a flexible schedule with a combination of weekly remote and in office work What We Can Offer The salary range is $128,000 - $160,000, annually.   Relocation and/or a signing bonus may be available. What We Require: 

  • Bachelor's degree. 
  • 5 years of leadership-level experience in marketing or communications. 
  • Experience developing and carrying out high-level marketing and communications plans. 
  • Experience in leading fundraising and engagement communications, marketing and creative team. 
  • Experience building, leading, motivating, assessing and holding accountable hard-working, well-integrated professional teams, preferably in a higher education fundraising environment. 
  • Experience working with executive leadership to advance strategic priorities.

What You Will Need:

  • Expertise in core marketing principles, strategies and standard methodologies, as well as marketing and communications mediums. 
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to envision new projects and supervise them from concept to completion. 
  • Proven track record managing personnel, programs and budgets. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of every step in the communication and marketing materials production process to guide staff, outside vendors and teammates in creating outstanding products. 
  • Ability to inspire others, foster cross-divisional collaboration and manage by influence across a diverse organization. 
  • Ability to give guidance, receive constructive feedback and integrate varying points of view. 
  • Ability to set priorities, meet due dates and balance multiple demands in a complex and fast-paced work environment. 
  • The highest standards of professional behavior; excellent judgment and the ability to treat confidential information with discretion. 
  • Ability to practice and adhere to organizational values.

What We Would Like You To Have:

  • Advanced degree in a communications-intensive field. 
  • Recognized (via awards, publications, etc.) by peers for excellence in Advancement communications. 
  • Experience with marketing and/or donor relationship databases (Salesforce, Ellucian Advance, etc.).
