JustLeadershipUSA (JLUSA) works to amplify the power of people who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system to self-organize and dismantle oppressive systems in their communities to build a just U.S.  Led by directly impacted individuals, JLUSA offers leadership training focused on leadership and organizational management, community building, advocacy and policy skills and communication. JLUSA aims to overcome the absence of consistent leadership in the criminal legal system by connecting the formerly incarcerated to necessary training under structured leadership.

 

JustLeadershipUSA is seeking an experienced, motivated, entrepreneurial driven leader to be our first Chief Development Officer. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing growth and success of JLUSA’s fundraising, ensuring we continue to reach - and exceed - our annual revenue goal (FY22 budget is $5MM, including private contributions and government grants). The incoming CDO will be focused on building and managing a portfolio of donors and on our continued evolution as we strive to reach more inclusive fundraising opportunities and engage and activate new major donors. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CDO will be responsible for building and overseeing a development team that is passionate about the work and brings an orientation toward the growth and development of these high potential leaders. Finally, the CDO will bring an energetic passion for the mission of JLUSA along with strong organizational leadership skills. This leader will assure the necessary systems, structures, and processes are in place to support the exciting growth taking place within the organization. 

 

Roles & Responsibilities

FUNDRAISING strategy and execution

    Manages the Board’s Development Committee / Advisory Committee (TBD) and is responsible for coordinating the CEO’s portfolio to focus on top prospects capable of making transformational gifts

    Envision, lead, and implement a multiyear development strategy that is intentionally inclusive, comprehensive, innovative, and far-reaching, aligned to JLUSA’s strategic plan, and contains measurable goals.

    Plan and execute fundraising events and campaigns

    Develop and implement a comprehensive Resource Development Plan that meets or exceeds goals for the following: Individual Giving, Corporate Donations, Special Events, Planned Giving, Capital Fundraising, Direct Mail, and Major Gifts.

    Develop and implement a system of donor development and management that includes: Prospect Research, Database Integrity, Acknowledgement, and Recognition.

    Develop and monitor the annual fundraising budget and goals to ensure 5% growth in revenue on an annual basis.

    Establish strategies for securing a more extensive robust base of partners to increase restricted and unrestricted initiatives furthering the mission of JLUSA

    Collaborate with Programs and Communications teams to develop and implement effective outreach strategies to pursue partnerships that support the expansion of JLUSA’s programs and operations.

    Collaborate with the Operations and Programs team to develop and review written proposals and reports

    Manage multiple, complex and multifaceted internal and external projects and relationships

    Build and manage a team of high-performing professionals

    Set and drive team-wide goals and engage in active coaching and professional development conversations with direct reports

EXECUTIVE leadership

    Partner and collaborate with all members of the Executive Team, ensuring that the Development team is a trusted collaborator with members of all teams across the organization, acting as a force multiplier to amplify the work and impact of the organization

    Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for all fundraising and development function activities. Partner with other senior leaders, Board members, and development staff to continue to grow JLUSA’s reach and impact

    Represent JLUSA externally, including with board members and major donors, in cultivating and securing significant gifts to the organization

TEAM LEADERSHIP

    Advance equity and racial diversity within the development team.

    Provide leadership, training, and support for the department, including directly managing and developing the development team, ensuring goals are met.

    Establish a strong partnership model for how other teams will work with development to advance the organization’s goals.

    Partner with teams before, during and after projects are completed to ensure they are smoothly integrated into the operational structure and fully functional.

    Apply strong decision-making, innovative and creative thinking, and problem-solving skills to successfully diversify JLUSA’s donor-base and overall fundraising goals.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Mission & Values Alignment: Demonstrates a passion for, close involvement/experience with, and understanding of Criminal Legal system, Social Justice and Directly Impacted Community’s issues and needs, including centering the voices of those who have been historically oppressed having a contemporary analysis of structural racism and bias.

    Fundraising Expertise: At least 10 years of experience managing relationships with diverse donor constituencies. Proven ability to cultivate high-performing portfolios that contribute to the organization’s growth and sustainability. Ability to successfully ask for multi-year, multi-million dollar gifts from diverse sources, including individuals and institutions. Experience partnering with other high-level fundraisers, particularly Board members, to build support for an organization. Familiarity with government funding is a strong plus.

    Executive & Team Leadership Experience: Proven history of leading, inspiring, and developing cohesive and high functioning teams with diverse identities to effectively deliver outcomes while centering an organization’s mission. Track record of effective collaboration with other executive leaders. Experience setting and driving strategy at the organization level. Ability to manage up, down, and across an organization effectively, with and without formal authority.

    Collaboration & Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to cultivate, grow, and manage positive, mutually beneficial relationships at all levels of an organization. Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence. Proven collaborator, able to work with and through senior leadership teams, as well as across functions.                      

Compensation is commensurate with experience
