Summary: 

The Grant Writer will work directly with the Director of Institutional Giving to write, prepare and submit grant applications, letters of inquiry, progress reports, etc. for foundation and corporate donors. The Grant Writer will help identify prospective donors, find grant opportunities from new funders, assist with writing grant proposals, facilitate the grant submission process and work with the Director of Institutional Giving and the program staff to write and submit reports for existing grants, as needed. Writing experience is required. Interest in writing and desire and willingness to learn about SPLC’s mission and programs is essential.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Identify new donors aligned with SPLC’s mission and programs; prospect new grant opportunities;
  • Write foundation and corporate grant proposals, letters of intent, progress reports, donor correspondence,;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of organizational developments and projects in each programmatic area;
  • Maintain a portfolio of grant records for donor stewardship and cultivation as well as timely submission of funding requests and progress reports; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a development office;
  • Experience with CRM databases; and
  • High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent English, writing, editing and proofreading skills;
  • Must have flexibility and the ability to manage multiple projects/deadlines;
  • Ability to conduct funding research as well as develop and build relationships with corporate and foundation partners;
  • Proficiency in data management, including attention to detail about grant requirements, award cycles, reporting timelines, application due dates, etc.;
  • Ability to write documents that capture complex programs in a compelling manner;
  • Commitment to SPLC’s mission to fight hate, seek justice, and advance the human rights of all people;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Must be able to multi-task; strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a diverse, fast paced environment;
  • Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.

Due to COVID-19, our offices are currently closed and staff is working remotely.  If this position is filled while our offices remain closed, the new employee will work remotely until the offices reopen.  We are not asking newly hired employees to relocate while the offices are closed.
