Sonoran Institute is seeking a Senior Director of Development and Marketing to plan and coordinate all aspects of resource development and visibility for the organization. Collaborative leadership is required on all initiatives including special events, major gifts, grants, sponsorship acquisition, and individual, planned, and in-kind giving as well as the marketing functions of communications, print, brand management, and social media.

For more than 30 years, Sonoran Institute has been a leading binational environmental organization connecting people and communities with the natural resources that nourish and sustain them in the U.S. southwest and northern Mexico.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Secure resources to connect people and communities with the natural resources that nourish and sustain them through the solicitation and acquisition of major donors, sponsorships, and maintaining ongoing relationships.
  • Active messaging to position and attain new and continued support from external audiences.
  • Lead team, create development and marketing strategies, and manage budgets and administration of procedures.


  • Advanced degree or Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years of relevant experience in a relevant field, including but not limited to business, environmental sciences, communications or liberal arts
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing, fundraising, including grant writing, direct mail, donor relations, special events
  • A commitment to natural resource conservation
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with web-based tools and collaboration
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing successful fundraising campaigns
  • Proven track record in securing major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Energetic, outgoing, flexible, creative, and a proactive problem solver


  • Bilingual—English and Spanish language proficiency a plus
  • Marketing Communications experience in brand development, messaging, or PR
  • Demonstrated expertise in social media
