Director, Development, Amputee Coalition

Position: 

Based in Washington, DC and reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, and in collaboration with other executive leaders, the Development Director will lead the strategic identification, cultivation, and solicitation of new individual and institutional donors. This critical position will lead the efforts of the development team to implement a comprehensive giving strategy focused on maintaining/strengthening existing revenue areas and building new areas.  

Responsibilities for this position include: 

  • Planning, developing and implementing a strategic plan of action with objectives, timelines and evaluation plans for small and large individual gifts, foundation, corporate, and other planned giving that include identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual prospects and donors. 
  • Leading and coaching a small team of professionals and managing the workplan for the department 
  • Overseeing an annual integrated solicitation and communications calendar for all individual donors including membership and up the giving pyramid to higher giving societies. 
  • Providing executive level reporting and analysis on fundraising efforts to AC leadership including the Board and relevant committees on an ongoing basis.  
  • Working with the COO to develop and administer annual budgets for fundraising activities including development operations, individual giving, planned giving and special events. sponsorships, and advertisements 
  • Maintaining the current portfolio of individual and corporate donors through regular and relevant communication and stewardship 
  • Facilitating new relationships between potential donors and the leadership team 
  • Directing an annual review and analysis of fundraising efforts and conduct an ongoing review of constituency building, engagement, and conversion to donors. 
  • Working closely with the Director of Communications on the organization’s messaging strategy by providing perspective on audiences relevant to the fundraising division. 
  • Directing the development and production of all donor focused collateral including, planned giving communications, cultivation materials, solicitations, and donor/prospective donor-oriented web content 
  • Participating and providing leadership on cross-department teams designed to plan and execute successful events  

Core Competencies and Qualifications  

The development director should have demonstrated experience with the following core skills and competencies.   

  • Proven leader with 5-8 years of successful senior-level experience in creating development campaigns, and a proven history of success with, major gift, industry, grant-writing, and planned giving fundraising. 
  • Proven ability to develop strategies, cultivate, solicit and steward major and institutional donors in the $10,000 - $1,000,000 range, and the vision to inspire high-net worth individuals, industry, and foundations. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior staff, and board and committee members, in development-related activities, and increasing their comfort with and success in fundraising activities. 
  • Ability to establish and meet performance objectives and quantifiable benchmarks. 
  • The intellectual depth, maturity, and collaborative skills to work effectively with leadership and staff. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a cooperative working style, and an enthusiasm for creating networks between and among key constituents. 
  • The ability to self-motivate, and the high ethical standards required for the cultivation and stewardship of donated funds. 
  • A Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree in nonprofit management, marketing, business, or a similar field is desired. CFRE or ACRFE are highly desirable 
  • Ideally, candidates will have familiarity or experience with limb loss/limb difference.  
  • May require overnight travel of up to six trips per year.

  • Communications: Including the ability to engage, persuade, inform, and educate internal and external audiences verbally and in writing  
  • Organization: including project, stakeholder, process, and workflow development and management   
  • Technical:  including experience using donor/constituent management systems. financial management/reporting systems, fundraising systems/tools, Microsoft 365, and other relevant software as well as the ability to analyze data
