High Desert Museum – Organization Description

Since opening in 1982, THE HIGH DESERT MUSEUM has brought together wildlife, culture, art and natural resources to promote an understanding of the natural and cultural heritage of North America's High Desert country. We do so through indoor and outdoor exhibits, wildlife in natural habitats, living history demonstrations and dynamic programs on a beautiful, 135-acre campus in the pine forest. The Museum is a nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a Smithsonian Affiliate, was the 2019 recipient of the Western Museums Association’s Charles Redd Award for Exhibition Excellence and was awarded the 2021 National Medal for Museum and Library Services. During the 2018-19 fiscal year, 195,000 visitors enjoyed the Museum.

 

The Museum is located in Bend, Oregon, a fast-growing, charismatic city nestled against the Cascade Range at the edge of the High Desert. Job Summary- Senior Donor Relations Manager

The Senior Donor Relations Manager supports a holistic and strategic approach to fundraising. They are a leader in the Museum’s Development program and responsible for developing and maintaining active and productive relationships with donors, sponsors, and members. By working closely with the Executive Director and Director of Philanthropy they will be part of the team that will be involved with all aspects of fundraising.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Communications, Nonprofit Management or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years professional, non-profit fundraising experience
  • Adept at creating and implementing strategic fundraising plans
  • Demonstrated major gifts experience with a successful track record of securing five-figure gifts
  • Ability to interface directly and frequently with donors, volunteers and other constituents at all levels and to build and maintain productive working relationships with them
  • Experience and familiarity with Oregon’s local and regional philanthropic landscape
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use a DEAI lens in approaching fundraising, the work environment and engaging the community
  • Ability to collaborate and work strategically as a leader and as part of the Museum team
  • Ability to work well in a small, entrepreneurial team environment
  • Experience working in an arts/cultural setting strongly preferred
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability
  • Must possess excellent project management skills, strong teamwork and interpersonal skills with ability to work towards short and long-term goals
  • Demonstrate commitment to Museum’s mission and to department funding objectives
  • Ability to develop and manage procedures and systems based on best practices
  • Must demonstrate organization, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to respond to unanticipated situations and shift priorities while remaining poised and calm under pressure
  • High ethics, integrity and sound professional judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with tact and discretion
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint, Blackbaud software or equivalent donor database and Greater Giving or comparable event management software
  • Tolerance for dynamic work environment as Museum continues to grow and management roles evolve and shift

Responsibilities and Tasks

Fundraising

  • Manages their own portfolio and is responsible for soliciting major gifts primarily from individuals in the Desert Sage Society
  • Conducts research and utilizes data analytics to identify best prospects
  • Plans events to cultivate donors, members and sponsors
  • Utilizes Moves Management to implement strategies and activities for prospecting, donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation
  • Responsible for donor renewals, acknowledgements, reports, record keeping and recognition
  • Comfortable with face-to-face interactions, virtual meetings and calls
  • Has community presence through involvement in civic organizations

Planned Giving

  • Helps to grow endowment to support operations
  • Stewards existing R.W. Chandler Society & Loyalty Society members

Management and Budgeting

  • Aids in developing fundraising operating budgets, tracking progress on monthly and YTD revenue goals
  • Codes revenue and expenses for Accounting and Executive Assistant/Database Manager
  • Ability to grown into managing members of the Development team, depending on experience

Events

  • Oversees the most significant annual fundraising event for the High Desert Museum – the High Desert Rendezvous (the event may be in-person, virtual or hybrid). Oversees sponsorship, individual donations, auction procurement (live and silent), and logistics by working with fellow staff, committee members, and volunteers.
  • Assist in preparation, execution and guest relations for other stewardship/fundraising events collaborating across department

 

Other

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
