Director, Moonshot Accelerator

The ASU Foundation, one of five nonprofit entities that make up ASU Enterprise Partners, is seeking a Director, Moonshot Accelerator.

The director is a senior professional who will build and operate a Moonshot Accelerator dedicated to preparing leaders of university initiatives to compete for and secure significant philanthropic investments. The director will engage leaders and staff across the ASU Foundation and the university including directors of development and their respective Deans, faculty members and Knowledge Enterprise personnel to design a suite of support services responsive to participants’ needs and funding competition parameters, build a robust pipeline of teams and enhance ASU’s competitiveness for philanthropic “big bets.” This position reports to the Vice President for Presidential Advancement.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead university teams through the Moonshot Accelerator each year and prepare them to effectively attract new capital, apply or compete for significant philanthropic fundraising opportunities and scale their initiatives
  • Design the infrastructure and programming elements such as the formation of selection and review committees, the application process, and the process of selecting each new cohort of teams
  • Oversee the execution and delivery of the Moonshot Accelerator, providing regular updates to senior leadership of ASUF and the university
  • Manage the continuous improvement of the curriculum and training components of the accelerator as well as the group of mentors, coaches and consultants who will provide individualized goal setting and benchmarking support to the teams throughout the accelerator cycle
  • Assess team performance and build trusting coaching relationships to facilitate problem solving and course correction as needed
  • Enable team retention and team satisfaction through continuous improvement
  • Coordinate, with the ASUF Vice President, to ensure the Accelerator’s teams are aligned with the university’s charter, design aspirations and goals
  • Support teams in collaboration with relevant development staff with preparing for, navigating, and closing on capital and philanthropic investment opportunities
  • Work with the Presidential Advancement research team and directors of development to continuously identify and cultivate relevant philanthropic funding opportunities
  • Support the development of a post-accelerator plan for each team to provide ongoing support and systematically track outcomes of various proposals
 

What you’ll need:

  • Knowledge of social innovation and systems transformation landscape, philanthropic and higher education trends and other related fields of impact
  • Ability to work and build relationships with faculty experts, entrepreneurs and ventures including with startups, entrepreneurs and organizations looking to scale
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of development/fundraising, preferably in higher education
  • Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Self-starter able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects.
  • Demonstrated achievement in securing philanthropic investments
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, results oriented environment with a proven ability to manage complex and evolving relationships and priorities
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible
  • Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies
  • Ability to represent the institution well
  • An advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems
  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment
  • Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments
  • Proven ability to lead projects and/or team members
  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include early mornings, evenings and weekends to accommodate meetings and events
  • Ability to meet demanding work schedule expectations
 

Relevant qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least eight years’ successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education: OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved. Graduate degree in a related field preferred.

Mental demands:

Clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines.

 

Working conditions:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. This position may require some early mornings and evenings to accommodate meetings and events. This position currently requires you to work from the office.

 

Working equipment:

This position will require a Surface/laptop computer, a mobile communication device ($30 bi-weekly payroll reimbursement), business cards, corporate credit card and University Club membership.
