Amherst College

Director of Advancement Operations

Amherst College, located in Amherst, MA and one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, announces an exciting opportunity for an experienced Advancement professional to join its accomplished, highly functioning team as Director of Advancement Operations. This professional will join Amherst at a pivotal moment as the College is in the midst of Promise: The Campaign for Amherst’s Third Century, for which more than $500 million has been raised to date against the campaign’s $625 million goal. Renowned for its dedicated faculty, open curriculum, generous financial aid policies, and scenic 1,000-acre campus, Amherst offers a bachelor’s degree in 39 majors across the arts, natural and social sciences, and humanities. For the past several years, more than 45 percent of Amherst’s students have identified as domestic students of color, plus 9 percent international students. Amherst is one of the few truly need blind colleges in the nation: students are admitted without regard to their financial situations, and each admitted student is guaranteed financial aid equal to their financial need. The College’s financial aid packages are consistently among the most generous in the nation, including a policy of not packaging loans with financial aid awards. These policies have made Amherst the most economically diverse among its peer universities and colleges.

Reporting to the Associate Chief Advancement Officer (ACAO), the Director will be a member of an accomplished, highly functioning advancement team, and will provide strategic leadership in Amherst’s advancement services to create and manage an effective infrastructure that supports the College’s fundraising and alumni engagement activities.

Leading a team of fourteen and with three direct reports, the Director will manage Advancement Data Services (which includes biographical data and gift and pledge processing) and Advancement Reporting & Systems and is responsible for management of the Advancement CRM, software and databases; gift and pledge processing; reporting; data input and retrieval; web application development and maintenance; prospect management and tracking systems; as well as additional duties as assigned by the ACAO. The Director will also provide oversight to the department’s budget and finances. The Director is a key administrative liaison with several campus departments including Information Technology, Institutional Research, and Registrar.

The Director will take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and will participate in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Amherst College is committed to recruiting candidates from historically marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds and identities, as well as individuals whose prior experience demonstrates leadership in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
