SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development and Marketing develops and drives the fundraising strategy for Anthesis, ensuring the implementation of marketing/fundraising activities for the agency and includes management, administration and reporting of campaign goals, major gifts, grant-writing activities and special events. As a highly external position, the Director of Development and Marketing is also responsible for donor prospecting, cultivating and stewarding relationships with individual and institutional donors; plans and conducts public relations program designed to create and maintain favorable public image for Anthesis in order maximize all revenue streams, including but not limited to, fundraising, job placement, contract work, consumer enrollments and Thrift Store sales.  As a member of the Executive Staff, the Director of Development and Marketing has  the authority to direct and coordinate overall marketing of the organization, including persons served, services and/or products, by performing the following duties:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other Duties may be assigned.

 Is responsible to ensure all job duties are performed in-line with and in support of the mission of Anthesis. Acts as an advocate for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially as it relates to prospective employment and other Anthesis programs.

  • Works in conjunction with the Executive Director to develop and implement a comprehensive, long- and short-term development plan including strategies related to individual giving, institutional giving, in-kind donations, special events and Thrift Store sales.
  • Develops, manages and monitors the annual budget for the development department with oversight and approvals by the Executive Director. 
  • Provides leadership and educates Board members in fundraising. Recruits other volunteers to work on various fundraising committees and projects.
  • Participates as a member of the executive team; promotes the organization's goals and philosophies to staff and volunteers, participates in management committees, and actively cooperates with other departments in support of the organization’s goals. 

 Individual Giving

  • Develops and implements a planned approach to managing relationships with individual donors and assigns responsibility for cultivation and solicitation to members of staff, volunteers and Board members as appropriate.
  • Develops and sustains a moves management structure to effectively move donors through a meaningful cycle of giving.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of direct mail campaigns including design/development of materials, selection of mailing list, and implementation of campaign and evaluating results.  
  • Proactively develops and drives the strategic process for identification, cultivation, and solicitation securing major gift and planned giving contributions from individuals.
  • Develops and supervises implementation of special event fundraising.

 Institutional Giving

  • Develops and implements a planned approach to corporations and foundations whose areas of interest coincide with those of Anthesis
  • Identifies, cultivates and creates new relationships with foundations and corporations to increase support for Anthesis by 5% each year.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with corporate and foundation representatives to develop specific proposals for their consideration and manage year-round engagement for optimal partnerships.
  • Builds opportunities for job placements and other programmatic and in-kind contributions while representing the organization externally.

Marketing & Communications

  • Oversees the creation of content for all public relations materials (newsletters, brochures, annual report, website, social media, etc.)
  • Manages the organization’s CRM database and ensures optimum use.
  • Develops and manages the organization’s external communications calendar utilizing all forms of media.
  • Creates and implements a donor acknowledgment system that ensures all donors receive a formal agency thank you with all applicable tax information in a timely manner.
  • Uses the Thrift Store as a retail marketing opportunity to share with the public our mission, inclusive workforce, arts and crafts created by program participants and other public relations opportunities.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS AND OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Acts as liaison with the community, representing the agency in a professional manner.
  2. Ensures the case for support is strong and current, based on the organization’s mission; develops methods to train staff and board members to articulate the case for support for a unified message to the community.
  3. Develop relationships between Anthesis and the commercial and private sectors to obtain fiscal and other support from them, including development of a recognition program for all contributors to the organization whether cash, in-kind, stock or other gifts.

Researches and coordinates campaigns to seek donations and development dollars from individuals and corporations that come to the organization unattached to a project or item. Author’s proposals for grants as needed.

  • Leads and manages all aspects of the donor engagement cycle for donations, including stewardship of current and potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion; development of regular communication strategies with donors; donor recognition.
  • Coordinates and implements public relations efforts for the organization, including development of all promotional materials and efforts such as, newsletters, press releases, brochures, speaking engagements, business presentations, web-site media, etc.
  • Researches, negotiates and coordinates new marketing activities. Prepares marketing activity reports.
  • Provides information through public speaking at business and professional meetings, banquets etc. Networks with the local community to ensure high visibility of the organization within the community. Attends and actively participates in community based organization meetings such as Chamber of Commerce, Service Clubs, Mayor’s Committee, etc. Professionally represents Anthesis during all community projects and at public, social and business gatherings.   
  • Utilizes the website and other electronic media to reach out to additional community members with the marketing materials developed for the organization. Responsible for oversite of Anthesis’ marketing database using Salsa Labs/Donor Pro or similar software ensuring data is accurate and tracked in a way to enable donor management, donor renewal timing, accurate recognition, acknowledgement and stewardship.
  • Responsible for complying with all Anthesis standards, including safety. Responsible for prompt reporting of injuries and other safety issues to the Director of Human Resources and/or the Executive Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  •  SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Will supervise staff in the development department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws and includes but is not limited to:  interviewing and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Will also direct the sales and operations activities of the Thrift Store staff to ensure profitability.

     QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     • Must have proven success in fund development for a non-profit; experience with and passion for fundraising from multiple donors to support improving the financial landscape of Anthesis.
    • At least 5 years’ experience in fundraising focused on individual and institutional giving, grant writing, public relations and marketing, donor relations management systems and gift processing.
    • A Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university, preferable in Communications, Public Relations or relevant field.
    • Excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated strength in organizational, managerial, and communication skills and attention to
    • Understanding and experience in retail sales operations a plus.
    • Adaptability and nimbleness to assess new information, adjust appropriately and chart new courses; comfort pivoting between high-level, strategic work and smaller tasks – no job is too big or too small!
    • Must possess computer competency be proficient in using CRMs, including spread sheet, publishing and database applications, including proficiency with MS Office and donor database management; knowledge of Salsa Labs or Donor Pro and MS Publisher is a plus.
    • Skilled in working effectively with high profile donors and organizations.

    Must possess valid California Driver's License and have three (3) to five (5) years driving experience, a good driving record, access to dependable transportation; must present and maintain proof of automobile insurance and vehicle registration.

    LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATIONSKILLS:

    Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an ability to create powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising/fund development. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; Ability to develop related reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally and in writing; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, consumers, staff, and the general public.  Experience and credibility when presenting materials to various audiences.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    Valid California Driver's License.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

    Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an executive management team.  Must have knowledge of the public policy arena and process. Must have knowledge of state and federal labor laws; as well as knowledge of Americans with Disabilities act.
