Position Overview

The Individual Giving Director, like all roles at City Year San José/Silicon Valley (CY SJ.SV), plays a role in advancing our mission while driving social justice and focusing on equity. Working with like-minded individuals, the role is responsible for renewing $2M in the first year and growing to $3M over a three-year period from individual, family, and private foundation prospects and donors with a focus on new revenue, and donor retention and growth. The Individual Giving Director, working with the Managing Director, Development and Executive Director, builds and manages relationships with individuals and foundations and solicits gifts and partnerships that reflect their philanthropic and community engagement goals. Managing 90-120 active prospects, the position stewards accounts through the full prospect management cycle.

Benefiting from the infrastructure of a national nonprofit, this role interacts with centers of expertise and colleagues at 28 other sites. At the local level, this position serves on a three-person Development Leadership Team and a local fundraising team of six. The Individual Giving Director is a fundraising thought partner directing strategy and cultivation leveraging relationships and stories from AmeriCorps Members, alumni, City Year San José/Silicon Valley Board of Directors, and donors.

Connecting donors to our work in educational equity and the AmeriCorps members who impact academic and socio-emotional learning outcomes, the position develops and manages programs and campaigns that solicit gifts from individuals and foundations leveraging Salesforce, prospecting tools, teams at HQ that support local fundraising professionals, support from the Development Operations Coordinator. Fundraising campaigns include an annual giving program, multi-channel fundraising campaigns, fund-a-needs, and grants program. The Individual Giving Director manages the work of a shared grant writer and a temporary external grants coordinator.

 

Job Description

Responsibilities 

 

Manage the Individual and Private Foundation Donor Cycle: 

  • Partner with the (CY SJ.SV) Valley Board of Directors, Executive Director, Development Team, and HQ Prospect Research team to identify and qualify new potential individual donors while closing gifts of up to seven-figure gifts annually.
  • Create and execute the Annual Giving Program and strategy to sustain and increase individual giving (may include end of year appeal, multi-channel marketing campaigns, etc.).  Develop and implement fundraising and donor solicitation training for board and staff. 
  • Meet with current and potential investors virtually and in-person with up to 25% of time travel in the San Francisco Bay Area when it is safe to do so. 
  • Develop and manage the Major Gifts/Red Jacket Society (RJS) Program securing five to seven-figure multi-year gifts from individual donors in conjunction with the Managing Director, Development and Executive Director.

 

Foundation Grants 

  • Leverage the HQ prospect team, market assessments, Board, and grant newsletters to continually identify and qualify prospective foundation partners to fund current programs and transformational investments. 
  • Manage a temporary external grants contractor to support in identifying and qualifying prospective foundation donors, create a robust grants calendar, and implement a process to continually identify prospects and manage the grants program. 
  • Lead monthly grant meetings with HQ grant writer who writes foundation proposals. 

 

Cultivation Event Support 

  • With the support of the Development team, lead the fundraising and engagement efforts of individuals as champions and donors. 
  • Identify, steward, and solicit major Fund-a-Need and event donors and develop and execute Fund-a-Need strategies. 
  • Support the Development Team in planning the gala and cultivation event programs by identifying and recruiting honorees and other event speakers, inviting donors, and writing inspiring messages and scripts. 
  • Solicit challenge gifts for multi-channel marketing and fundraising campaigns.

 

Other duties as assigned. 

  

Qualifications 

  • 3-4 years of experience in successful fundraising, major gifts, sales, partnership development, and/or client account management securing over $1M annually. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of high-net worth community via local business, civic and cultural networks preferred. 
  • Experience planning and executing individual donor cultivation, retention, and solicitation strategies. 
  • Preferred experience in managing a pipeline via a donor management system such as  Salesforce. 
  • Efficient initiative and time management skills including the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple projects to achieve goals.  
  • Preferred understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and how they intersect with ethical fundraising. 
  • A commitment to social justice is required, and knowledge of public K12 education is preferred.
