Opportunity for Impact
This Chief Development Officer (CDO) position is a unique, new,
and critically important role for a top-tier development executive
to help optimize Central Synagogue’s position for continued impact
in both the local and national Jewish community. The CDO will
join Central at an exciting moment of growth and will play a
crucial leadership role in an exceptionally invested and generous
community. Central is looking for someone who will regard this
as a compelling, long-term opportunity to partner with
Executive Director, Marcia Caban and Senior Rabbi, Angela Buchdahl,
to enhance the development infrastructure and help
lead Central through its next phase of growth and
Central Synagogue seeks an engaging,
strategic, highly relational, and growth-minded
leader to become its Chief Development Officer. Reporting
directly to the Executive Director, the Chief Development Officer
will bring new approaches and innovative strategies that complement
Central’s robust philanthropic base. A
significant focus will be on developing genuine relationships
with Central members and deepening their
involvement and connection to the Synagogue through
consistent, regular, and relevant contact. While collaborating
to support Central’s existing and future programmatic innovation,
the CDO will also work to optimize Yom Kippur Appeal
efforts and annual fundraising goals to maximize
The successful candidate must have an authentic passion for the
mission and vision of the Synagogue and broader Jewish
life, and proven success in building capacity and increasing
revenue, as well as experience developing and
maintaining meaningful working relationships with board
members, partners, and colleagues. The CDO must be extremely
personable and thoughtful and skilled at communicating the vision
and unique opportunity to participate in Central’s exceptional
impact and place in the Jewish community and beyond. The CDO
will inspire, connect, empower, and
mentor the development team.
The CDO will work in partnership with the Board of Trustees and
the Development Committee on all fundraising efforts and will be an
integral member of the Synagogue’s senior executive leadership
- Contribute to the
robust, engaged life of the Synagogue: identify ways to advance its
mission and identify, steward, and attract the financial resources
to do so.
- Optimize the success of
development efforts such as the Yom Kippur Annual Appeal, gifts
related to lifecycle occasions, special programmatic gifts, planned
giving campaigns, endowments campaigns and capital
- Actively participate in
gift solicitations. Cultivate, steward, and build strong
relationships with Synagogue members.
- Plan events and
programming throughout the year, including leadership
development groups sessions, dinners at the homes of clergy and
congregants, donor missions and trips, receptions,
speaker panels, etc.
- Ensure that Salesforce
is used to its fullest - along with high-touch efforts - to track
and to appreciate and acknowledge appropriately and promptly all
giving and other activities by donors.
- Mentor, train, develop,
and inspire staff, creating a dynamic, effective, and integrated
development team, including the Director of
Development, Development Operations
Manager, and Development Associate.
- Consult and communicate
in a genuine, consistent, and polished manner with Congregants
and Board members, including the Development Committee and others,
closely across the organization including with the Adult,
Youth and Family Engagement teams, Finance, Membership
- Serve as a trusted,
valued, and discrete resource to clergy, the Executive Director,
and the Board.
- A proven track record of
success, innovation, and progressive accomplishments in fundraising
with experience in all or most areas, such as annual, capital and
endowment campaigns, major gifts, and
- Demonstrated ability to
effectively create and implement a fundraising strategic plan and
operation in cooperation with engaged lay leaders.
- A passionate and
optimistic individual who inspires team members to find
opportunities to make improvements and strive for excellence in
execution of their plans.
- A motivational
communicator, both written and verbal, who is effective in 1-on-1
and group settings.
- Demonstrated ability to
work closely and comfortably with senior level management and
organizational skills, with the ability to complete projects on a
timely basis and to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent people skills.
Warm, honest, and kind in dealing with others. Ability to
interact and engage comfortably with a wide variety of key
constituents across the Central community.
- Familiarity and comfort
with Jewish communal life in New York City and the broader
- Availability on weekends
and during the High Holy Days.
- Experience with
Salesforce and/or use of similar CRM systems.
