Central Synagogue

Chief Development Officer

New York, New York

About Central Synagogue

Central Synagogue, dating back to the early 1800s, is one of the leading and largest Reform congregations in the country. Located in Midtown Manhattan, Central’s reach includes more than 2,800 member families, a livestream community numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and more than 800 students, from birth to twelfth grade, in the Nursery and Religious schools. Central Synagogue stands at the heart of one of the greatest centers of Jewish life. It has long played a significant role in the national Reform movement and is known for its innovation and leadership in worship, leading to a greatly expanded audience over the last two decades.

Central Synagogue works toward a world in which Judaism is core to the lives of Central members and Jews everywhere and is a profound and positive force for humanity. Central continually redefines what it means to be Jewish today, both within the Synagogue community and far beyond the Synagogue’s walls. The diverse clergy and professional team work hard, in collaboration with lay leadership, to build deep and enduring relationships among Central members, creating a caring, dynamic, and joyful community.

Central Synagogue is an inclusive and welcoming community. The Synagogue encourages participation from all who seek a connection to Jewish life and want to be part of its sacred community regardless of religious background, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Central is committed to being an open tent, a place that welcomes all people, including those who have been historically and institutionally marginalized or excluded from the Jewish community.

The Synagogue is well resourced, has over 100 staff, and is governed by a 29-member Board of Trustees.

Opportunity for Impact

This Chief Development Officer (CDO) position is a unique, new, and critically important role for a top-tier development executive to help optimize Central Synagogue’s position for continued impact in both the local and national Jewish community. The CDO will join Central at an exciting moment of growth and will play a crucial leadership role in an exceptionally invested and generous community. Central is looking for someone who will regard this as a compelling, long-term opportunity to partner with Executive Director, Marcia Caban and Senior Rabbi, Angela Buchdahl, to enhance the development infrastructure and help lead Central through its next phase of growth and beyond.

Central Synagogue seeks an engaging, strategic, highly relational, and growth-minded leader to become its Chief Development Officer. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Chief Development Officer will bring new approaches and innovative strategies that complement Central’s robust philanthropic base. A significant focus will be on developing genuine relationships with Central members and deepening their involvement and connection to the Synagogue through consistent, regular, and relevant contact. While collaborating to support Central’s existing and future programmatic innovation, the CDO will also work to optimize Yom Kippur Appeal efforts and annual fundraising goals to maximize Central’s success.

The successful candidate must have an authentic passion for the mission and vision of the Synagogue and broader Jewish life, and proven success in building capacity and increasing revenue, as well as experience developing and maintaining meaningful working relationships with board members, partners, and colleagues. The CDO must be extremely personable and thoughtful and skilled at communicating the vision and unique opportunity to participate in Central’s exceptional impact and place in the Jewish community and beyond. The CDO will inspire, connect, empower, and mentor the development team.

The CDO will work in partnership with the Board of Trustees and the Development Committee on all fundraising efforts and will be an integral member of the Synagogue’s senior executive leadership team.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the robust, engaged life of the Synagogue: identify ways to advance its mission and identify, steward, and attract the financial resources to do so.

  • Actively participate in gift solicitations. Cultivate, steward, and build strong relationships with Synagogue members.
  • Plan events and programming throughout the year, including leadership development groups sessions, dinners at the homes of clergy and congregants, donor missions and trips, receptions, speaker panels, etc.
  • Ensure that Salesforce is used to its fullest - along with high-touch efforts - to track and to appreciate and acknowledge appropriately and promptly all giving and other activities by donors.
  • Mentor, train, develop, and inspire staff, creating a dynamic, effective, and integrated development team, including the Director of Development, Development Operations Manager, and Development Associate.
  • Consult and communicate in a genuine, consistent, and polished manner with Congregants and Board members, including the Development Committee and others, as necessary.
  • Collaborate closely across the organization including with the Adult, Youth and Family Engagement teams, Finance, Membership and Communications.
  • Serve as a trusted, valued, and discrete resource to clergy, the Executive Director, and the Board.

  • A proven track record of success, innovation, and progressive accomplishments in fundraising with experience in all or most areas, such as annual, capital and endowment campaigns, major gifts, and planned-giving.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively create and implement a fundraising strategic plan and operation in cooperation with engaged lay leaders.
  • A passionate and optimistic individual who inspires team members to find opportunities to make improvements and strive for excellence in execution of their plans.
  • A motivational communicator, both written and verbal, who is effective in 1-on-1 and group settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and comfortably with senior level management and stakeholders.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, with the ability to complete projects on a timely basis and to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent people skills. Warm, honest, and kind in dealing with others. Ability to interact and engage comfortably with a wide variety of key constituents across the Central community.
  • Familiarity and comfort with Jewish communal life in New York City and the broader Jewish world.
  • Availability on weekends and during the High Holy Days.
  • Experience with Salesforce and/or use of similar CRM systems.
